I have a late-2008 (a year old this week!) Macbook (unibody) -- not pro. I'm trying to figure out how to hook it up to a Toshiba HDTV that's in our kitchen, so when I'm cooking I can watch stuff on my Mac on the television.

So far, I've had two different suggestions, and as far as I can tell, neither is a winner. First, the Apple store told me to do an adaptor that's DVI -- then I'd have to get a DVI - HDMI (think that's right) cable -- which is expensive!) -- to hook to the television. While at Best Buy looking for that, an Apple solutions specialist said, no no no, that would work, but not well. he said, get the mini display-VGA adaptor, which would than connect with a VGA/VGA cable, going into the television.

Well, that does not work. Everything connects, but all we see on the television, is the outer space Mac screen, and my dock -- with all the icons I use, by the way, so it's definitely my computer -- on the side. But it doesn't mimic my screen. I tried a DVD, I tried a show from Hulo.com, but nothing. An neither of these people mentioned the audio, either -- I'm a little miffed, though I certainly should have thought of that myself.

Any suggestions, anyone? And if this is the wrong forum, my apologies.

The HDTV may have a DVI input. Does it? VGA is a poor option. VGA and DVI do not transfer audio, so you'll need to use either your Mac's speakers or have an output-input to the TV.

I got a DVI to HDMI off of Amazon for under $2... But the Apple specialist was right, it doesn't work well.

I use a DVI to HDMI cable to run my MBP's output into my HDTV. It works fine. The thing is that my notebook has very different video hardware-especially the output port-than your unibody MacBook, and that's the crux of the issue.

You should use Apple's mini-DVI to DVI and then DVI to HDMI (if you don't have a DVI port on your TV). Monoprice is always the best place to go:

HDMI Cable, Home Theater Accessories, HDMI Products, Cables, Adapters, Video/Audio Switch, Networking, USB, Firewire, Printer Toner, and more!

I'm not sure why this method "doesn't work well." It's all digital and will give you the best quality image. Avoid going to VGA if you have an HDMI port available.

For me, the scaling gets messed up.

Edit: what about this? http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

Dude, just get VGA. On a small TV in the kitchen, you really don't need to worry about quality. I doubt there'll be any noticeable difference. You're just wasting money.

if its a unibody, its MDP.

The mono price adapter is what you need.

Well. If you read the first post then you'll notice that he has a late-2008 MB which has MDP.
