Problems transfering files from MAC to PC via a network!

I�m having a horrible time transferring files between my MAC and PC. I am backing up everything in my home folder because I need to send my powerbook in tomorrow. I am transferring everything over the network, which is also a pain in the ass because the PC never wants to recognize there is a WORKGROUP.
I keep on getting this error while transferring!
Cannot copy Icon
: The filename, directory name, or volume level syntax is incorrect.
So basically it stops all my transferring, and when I go to the folder where it stops whatever �Icon� is, it is not there.
Please help!
Or give me a better idea/way of backing up my idea via pc and mac.

If you don't have that much in your home folder burn the files to some CDs then you won't have to transfer to a PC just the CDs then back to your Mac when you get it back. Or a DVD would be even better if you have a superdive and some blank media.

Or you can zip or tar your home directory and just copy that one file. Or use a disk image.

It's 26gigs, taring it or zipping it is going to be a problem

Taring it shouldn't be too much of a problem since tar doesn't compress, but I don't know how long it would take.

Do you have a iPod? If you do and it's got room to store your files put it in disk mode and transfer the files that way.

What sort of network/file transfer are you using? I assume you're using SMB/Windows networking, but which machine is the file server, and which is the client?
Have you tried it the other way around?
Ie, if you're running the copy on the PC, with the Mac as the file server, have you tried making the PC the file server, and running the copy on the Mac?

There's already an FTP server on the Mac, so you'd be better off doing it the other way around. However, it depends on the nature of the files. If any of the files are multi-forked (not common on Mac OS X anymore thankfully), then the resource fork will be lost.
