Can you upgrade the processor in an imac?

Or is it soldered on the board? If you can replace it, will the motherboard in the imac, the core duo model, support a core2duo processor?

Yes it is upgradeable. You can buy a Core 2 Duo chip from newegg.com and install it.

I'd wait however for the next gen after that. They will probably still release a 677mhz bus variant.

is it socket 479(merom) or socket 775(conroe)?

Google around a bit for more specific info, but I've read it before and know for a fact that you can stick a Merom in the iMac.
