Too bad Comcast's network is down half the time. When I had it, it went down for a day or more every two weeks.

Time Warner/Road Runner/Bright House just kicked ours up, from 3Mbps to 5Mbps a couple of weeks ago, and they've been extremely reliable in the 4 years i've used them.

I have a 3Mbit/768Kbit DSL that's a bit cheaper than Comcast even with the phone line you have to purchase. If you already have phone service, it's a lot cheaper.

My first ever connection to teh Interweb was a 14.4 modem and a CompuServe account. Now I've got a 5mbit cable connection and routinely transfer more than the entire capacity of my first ever HD (40MB).

Word. Those were the good old days. I used to own/sysop a multi-node pirate board, heavily modded WWIV. In some ways it was better than the Web (much more "intimate"), it definitely had it's own charm.

Nope. Displaying porn on a supposedly "family friendly" site without due warning. There's standards to be kept.
Mention it all you like as long as you don't force others to look at it.

Hardly an exaggeration, I'm sorry to say. In some places, it's down all the time. I had to call Comcast to get downtime credit nearly every billing period. It was just awful. (And that was after waiting 2 months for them to even put in an order to get cable hooked up, because their system forgot that my apartment existed, and without them sending a surveyor to confirm that the building in fact has a third floor, they couldn't even put in an install order.)

The two weeks before I moved out of that apartment, my cable was completely dead (TV and internet), and it took them two weeks to get someone out to fix it. I cancelled it one day after it was fixed.

Then they proceeded to "lose" the disconnect request in the system, and tried to bill me for 4 months of service after I moved out. It took hours of calls over a two-month period to get that mess straightened out.

Comcast may offer high speeds, but in some areas their reliability is lousy (it can vary from neighborhood to neighborhood), and the quality of the company is abysmal.

I'm not sure if I'd move anywhere that had Comcast as the only broadband provider. I used to hear horror stories all the time from customers, and several of my friends, who worked out of their homes, and needed broadband access, were constantly down. One friend just bought another house, and WOW was available there, and he hasn't had any problems in six months!

That's rather high but for 4 megs it sounds almost ok as long as they don't have caps.

My service is actually 5 Mbps down. And no caps whatsoEVAR!

(Or at least none that I have encountered - personal best is about 15 GB downloaded in one day.)

300/400 baud modem. And I had to actually type ATDT at a command prompt to dial in to the local bulletin boards in town.

Luckily, Comcast has gotten more reliable for me recently. It used to be pretty bad, but it rarely goes down anymore. That said, their customer support is a nightmare. It took 6 weeks of calls for them to finally make an appointment (and remember it) to bring me an HD cable box with firewire (something not a single rep i talked to had heard of, and many were adamant that it didn't exist and refused to transfer me).

"I start fires!"
