I only found one other sure instance on Apple Support forums of iPad2 getting the Videos app frozen/fixated in middle of a video (even an iTunes-DL'd vid).
[ Apple - Support - Discussions - Video App Freezes iPad 2 ... ], but I've always found more knowledge here on MacNN.
Brand-newly rented (and completely DL'd) feature film (non-HD): I *can* play other video via the Videos app, but double-clicking on this *one* freezes the app.
I wanted to try *deleting/re-installing* the app, but Apple's pre-installed apps don't show a minus-sign option the way optional (DL'd) apps do.
If anyone's mojo has cracked this problem... I'd love to hear about it.

I guess you can do a "daisy cutter" type delete/reinstall with a factory restore and resync to a backup, but other than that, I got nothing.

Thanks for the suggestion.
In the meanwhile, I believe have good (good/bad) news:
Trying some (small or freebie) movies for DL, I have not have the problem with others.
But I hesitated to throw away $4 on "real" iTunes movie.
However, a round trip to Apple brick-mortar store would have cost 4x that in gas, so...
I re-rented the troublesome iTunes movie. Now *both* appear in my "purchases."
But the *second* version played through just fine.

My conclusions:
• Some videos (or some DLs) have data integrity issues.
• The "Videos" app does not (always) recover properly from such bad data.
YMMV
