Well, no sh!t, the hype not living up ?

Story of Apple's life.

I just don't see how criticism of a unknown product based on some hype generated on teh intarwebs is fair, let alone worthwhile.

I think that's part of the problem. There's an awesome load of hype and let's face it, it's rather irrational. We simply don't know yet what kind of features Apple will include. I'd be very disappointed if there's not a single one of those typical Apple features everybody just has to lust for. But even with such a feature, if you've already spent money on a MB(P) and also on an iPod touch or iPhone, Apple's going to have to price it very moderately if they expect people to buy it just for the fun of it. At $1k it would be serious business. Especially during an economic crisis. OTOH, what kind of feature would such a device need for it to sell to people who want neither MB(P) nor iPhone/iPod touch?

I think this product, like most, will have to offer at least some productivity advantages, for consumers to rationalize the cost. If you could use it at work, for anything, that would tip the scales for a lot of people, but if it's simply unusable for work (compared with other products), it won't take off.

Edit: yeah, pretty much what the post above me says.

That's a very narrow minded view.

The iPod took off despite having no big "work productivity" factor.

Apple is morphing more and more into an entertainment company. Work productivity is NOT the main focus anymore.

Yeah, and before erasing a somewhat longer post, I had written that the ipod was an exception. But did it really take off before the price came down to around $200? I don't think it did. The stakes are going to be higher with this. And like Simon said, the pickins are slimmer because of the economy.

Here's the other thing: No matter how awesome this thing is, I don't see any rational way it outsells something like an iPhone (because it's a phone and subsidized to boot). It's too niche. I just hope people aren't irrational dicks abut this and declare the thing a failure because of this.

Well, but again, don't judge too prematurely.

The iSlate will DO much more than the iPod, so a higher price IS justified.

And the iPod more than halved in price.

So let's assume the iSlate will start at $1,000 and then drop to $500 in a couple of years.
Don't you think a multi-media e-reader with phone capabilities and some limited productivity apps is worth $ 500 ?

Maybe no in this iteration, but if there will be G3 data, sound in- and output etc, how hard would it be to add phone capability ? Never mind that it's based on the iPhone OS.

Wouldn't it be funny if Apple brought back the "Fisher Price" look of the G3 for the tablet. not really

Meh. The iPhone is already doing that.

Interpath for iPhone on Vimeo

The Interpath for iPhone application allows for a remote pathologist to review and navigate high quality images of diagnostic quality using either the cellular network or WIFI networks on the iPhone. Using the application rapid specialist referrals can be made, without access to a computer, a microscope or the original specimen. The image can be reviewed by the pathologist and used to provide a diagnosis used in cancer and other disease treatments.

As per your post, they'd be rational dicks if they declared it a failure.

And as always, they'd completely miss the point, just like all the detractors completely missed the point of the iPod and the iPod mini: Just like the iPod, this thing will be exactly what it needs to be.

That fact alone will counteract any petty concerns, such as price or carrier exclusivity or necessity of journal subscriptions or whatever rational minds might throw in the way of it being exactly-what-you-wanted-without-knowing-it, and make it a raving success - in its second generation at the latest, when the price comes down, and the hoi polloi get off their compensatory high horses and accept that it's damn cool, and just follow the spendy elite instead of deriding them for throwing away money they themselves would have loved to spend on it.

Just like always.

How so? The iPhone wasn't just a success it was a huge success. It's irrational to expect any product to sell that well, let alone one with presumably similar features.

After the $400 million-advertising-budget-equivalent in free media attention following its January 2007 introduction?

It was completely obvious from the very first demo ("You had me at scrolling") that this thing was completely out of the ballpark and, given the popularity of the iPod, would sell like crazy.

At least, I sat there with goosebumps the four or five times I watched the keynote that week in the firm conviction that I'd just witnessed tech history, and that this would really change things in a radical way.

Revising your expectations after seeing the thing demoed makes sense. But expecting a homerun out of Apple every time blind? The fact that this (appears) to be similar to an iPhone is both a blessing and a curse.

Yeah, the iPhone is quite a revolution. So powerful and amazing what it can do in the palm of your hand and hard to believe that we didn't have this capability in the palms of our hands just few years ago. I have to agree with you .... from the very first demo, it was clear that the iPhone was not just the next thing down the pike but something ground-breaking (it was more obvious than the iPod when it was introduced).

I'm just hoping for a table device that shows me something so completely different, it will be as obvious a leap as the iPhone was Can't wait to see what happens Wednesday.

Here's a thought. If it's the most important thing SJ has worked on, maybe this is the first perpetual energy device. Charged by a combination of solar power (like a calculator) and whatever kinetic energy it can pick up from being moved around and used all the time. That'd be a pretty big deal for a higher power device though its been in calculators and other low power devices for years.

You guys have it all wrong - it'll be static electricity powered.
Just rub the device on a sweater or mock turtle-neck. Instant energy!

I had a thought (and I'm guessing others here have had the same idea) that the best thing Apple could do to pry my $$$ from my pocket would be to offer an iSlate device that would:

- connect to my current iPod touch or iPhone (I'm sure they could also create a self contained model)
- have a beautiful 10" screen (heck, give us 7" and 10")
- multi-touch sensors
- forward facing video camera (for video chat... or just make the iPhone load backwards into the device and place the hole in the appropriate location)
- independent (or somehow collaborative) battery
- iPhone OS what has an iSlate mode (for viewing media)
- price $399 for the 7" $499 for the 10" (the prices can come down in 9-14 months to $299 and $399)

It would completely underemphasis the physical device and let them move on to what they really want to do... which is be THE media provider for all paid print and web content.

Having another self contained device really doesn't jazz me up these days. I have a laptop, I have an iPhone... do I really want another device to support? Also, such a device would probably make me want to jump on a larger iPhone during the next upgrade cycle. Heck, Apple/AT&T probably want to tack on a $10 "tethering" fee, which I would probably suck up... grrrr.

And, we wait...

Seriously ?

I can already hear all the fanbois cry foul, and predict how Apple will fail when the prices come in higher.

Then they are going to shell out $1,000 and claim two years later that they had always believed that it would be a success, despite the high price.
