Err, I'm all against Bush. But you shouldn't defend him, protest is good but painting the street is quite illegal.

He didn't even get a chance to use it. According to the article I read, they arrested him while he was explaining it to the press.

Thought crime is double-plus-ungood.

Cops have been arresting non-protesters for just walking down the street. The cops pen people in and arrest everyone in some circumstances, including a French tourist who was unfortunate enough to be walking near some protesters.

They're also arresting people who are walking down the sidewalks in an organized way, which is legal provided that they aren't blocking street or pedestrian traffic.

It's a little known fact that NYC police officers employ a kind of "communal intelligence" - a bit like insects in bad sci-fi novels. If the first cop's brain starts to hurt he has to call in superiors to help him think

I hope there are severe repercussions. What the police are doing can't be legal (or at least it shouldn't be).

And people claim that our rights aren't being trampled on.

All the legal observers with videocameras that are swarming the streets. Lawsuits will follow with lots of footage from both sides. Wait a few weeks.

The police should have waited until the biker started demoing the printer. THEN ARREST HIM. He is guilty, no matter if the police saw the action or not.

It is like those guys who filmed themselves while drive-by shooting. This biker has a website where he demoes his printing bike. To the police, this is very strong evidence that they were dealing with the biker chalker.

There is a difference between chalk art on the street and this tasteless (while technologically impressive) matrix printer. He effectively defaced street.

If he had been an Arab guy, many people would have called the cops to "stop the suspicious bike bomber". The police agents were creating safety with no prejudice.

Hey that's what happens. Freedom of speech means going with the group that has the most influence, and at this point it is Republicans...or is it Democrats...hehe the two groups are so similar its sometimes hard to tell who is who?

Mac user or not, the guy is just another one of those moronic bush protesters, who parade around like a bunch of monkees.

Free speech my foot. You can not go around defacing sidewalks with chalk or whatever he is using.

I heard the detention centers in NYC are so full now, that many of the protesters are being held for 36 hours now. Serves em good.

The "Chalk" Takes over a month to go away.

He was defacing the city and got busted. Plain and simple.

People who makes this guy out to be some sort of martyr and think he wouldn't have got arrested under a Dem president are morons.

Interesting how the cops lied...interesting, but not surprising.
Too many cops think they are the law instead of "tools" of the law.

In many cities around the world there is a meteorological phenomenon called "rain". It would have washed off, spray paint on the other hand is a different story.

Yeah that was total bull, but it doesn't surprise me one bit.

I saw an episode of Maximum Exposure where a cop pepper sprays a clerk at Mcdonalds for "short changing" him $10. Yeah she was being uncooroperative, but how would you react if you KNOW for a fact that you didn't short change him and he comes in saying "Come with me you're under arrest."
When they reviewed the footage again they found he was in the wrong, and city wound up coughing up $600,000 to the clerk!
But of course he still got to keep his job.

It MAY have. This isn't just "Chalk"

I have seen REGULAR Chalk leave marks on sidewalks well after it has rained.

There are different types.

Most "Kid" chalk is MADE to wash away easily.

It would, but if everybody would do it it would become messy pretty quickly. And even when he's the only one who does it some people might be interested in reading his stuff everywhere. A public sidewalk is a public place to walk on, not a public advertising space.

A sensible reaction by the police would have been to tell him not to do it any more. But maybe they did that x-times before and he didn't listen. On the other hand if that's the first time the police encountered him then I think they overreacted.

Vandal : One who willfully or maliciously defaces or destroys public or private property.

this was not malicious or defacing or destroying...the written word is free speech in my America...if it was spray paint I say yay to him being arrested but this was a harmless form of protest...come on...it was chalk for God sake

Here are some FACTS for you:

Boston police said there were a TOTAL of 6 arrests during the ENTIRE week of protests at the DNC:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...2004Jul29.html

To date, there have been over 1700 arrests of protesters at the RNC, mostly misdemeanors.

Yeah, chalk that would be there for about a month. What's to stop somebody from doing it once a month, thus making it permament ?

The dude was engaging in graffiti, and graffiti vandals suck, and I'm glad they threw him in the slammer.

As the figures I posted above demonstrate, the NYPD is going NUTS arresting people for NO GOOD REASON. This is just another example of that. Jesus, they arrested someone who HAPPENED to be walking in the VICINITY of protesters!
