According to the article, the BoC has been experimenting with photochromatic ink that deteriorates when scanned or photocopied...is it applied in the new $20s?

Self-destructing cash? Are you sure that's not just a nasty rumor (or, in this case, rumour) circulated by Canadian credit card companies?

Hey, all I have is the same article you have.

Normal users shouldn't really be inconvenienced by ink that deteriorates when exposed to scanner or photocopier lights...it would rather suck if you couldn't leave them lying about in the sun, though.

Photoshop will bitch at you for even trying and not allow you to.

Most scanners & inkjets have Counterfeiting protection built right into the unit, it is something the companies don't like to talk about.

Even regular photocopiers have had that for years, apparently. It's not news.

Another interesting anti-counterfeiting device is the "EURion constellation." It's a specific pattern of five circles that supposedly was originally introduced in the Euro. It's easily recognizable by software. They have it in the new US$20 bills, too--look at the part with all the little "20"s. The "0"s are forming the EURion. Linkage

So then, does anyone know which scanners don't care? Time to bust out GIMP instead of PS.

Yeah. He's pretty scary looking. We don't want any more pictures of him going around.

Man...that was like reading War and Peace but it was a good read.

He'll probably get rich with his book and a movie deal.

Interesting side note is that up to 30% of American bank notes floating around in foreign countries is counterfeit.

Colombia is the second major supplier of American currency after the U.S.

Good read. I've got a counterfeit US $20 that I got from a local gas station. It felt "odd" when I inspected it later that day (though it looked ok, watermarks and all), so I segregated it and studied it later that night. It really is very well made, I showed it to an FBI friend of mine and he said it was what is commonly referred to as a "super bill". Made on a real press with real security ink on premium archival papers (even has fake "silk" threads). Other than the stock being just a tad too heavy (which is why it felt odd), it's almost completely indistinguishable from actual currency. Later, I went back to the store that I got it from and showed it to them, just in the hopes of educating them a bit on how to detect this type of fake note (part of my civic duty).

I suppose I should have turned it in, but it makes a great bookmark (and conversation piece).

Actually, the ATM is probably the only place where you DON'T have to take a closer look at your bills.
