Hi, I'm designing a website for my artwork, and for thumbnails I would like to show a 1 in X i in square that partially shows the artwork, and when you click on it, the full image appears.
I tried selecting the crop tool in photoshop, then entering the values in the crop field at the top, but it didn't work.
What I'm asking is: how can I make a 1 inX1 in cropping square in photoshop?

Thanks!

I dont know why your crop tool didnt work. but you can always just copy your image in to a new document that is 1x1 (72 DPI)...

Kind of tedious.. but it will work.

You don't say what version of Photoshop you're using, but there is probably an option for creating a web photo gallery. I have version 6 and it's under the File menu under Automation.

The dialog box is pretty self-explanatory. After you run the script, it will make separate web pages for each image - that's probably not what you want, but there will be two image folders - one with the full size images optimized for the web and another with thumbnails in whatever size you told it to make them. You can just grab those two folders and discard the rest.

This solution makes the whole image smaller for the thumbnails, doesn't crop them as you've said you were trying to do so keep in mind that if the original image is a rectangle, making the thumbnail a square will distort it somewhat.

Someone has probably written an action for doing what you want to do - have you done a Google search for photoshop actions crop - see what that turns up.

Take care, Margaret
