Hey cool, somebody else with the mysterious 350 Sawtooth

Is it just me, or do a lot of people here still have the graphite towers?

Yeah the good old Sawtooth 350. I almost got a Yikes 350 but I heard about the sawtooth coming so I held off. In any case, alot of people still do have the graphite towers. I was thinking of upgrading but I don't have the money now and frankly my Sawtooth is fine for all of my needs. I don't do any gaming on it(that's why i have a Ps2 and a Gamecube) so for my needs it's fine. It was a bit slow with 10.1 but with Jaguar I have very little to complain about in the speed department.

Dave

Yeah, same here: No need, no money

You should consider replacing your ATI Rage128 Pro, with either a nVidia GeForce2 MX,or a Radeon 8500 though. I did this when I bought Jaguar, and it feels a lot faster with Quartz Extreme enabled than without it, it's like a new computer. Terrific and definitely worth the money.

Eh, if I could find one for like $100 or less perhaps I would but otherwise it just seems wasteful to me. I realize it could be faster, but you can always get a faster machine if you spend more. As I said, if I could fine a QE enabled card cheap, I might spring for it. However, since the only thing it would bring me is faster UI, I'm not sure I wanna spring for it. Like i said, I don't do any gaming on my machine anymore so really QE would be the only usage of the card. Is that worth it? Is it really that much quicker? I'm pretty happy with Jag so I'm skeptical of whether QE would make a big difference.
Edit-After rereading your post, did you install Jag before replacing your Rage 128 Pro? If not, are you sure the speed improvement you're seeing isn't mostly from Jag itself and not QE?
Regards,
Dave

Yes, I's using Jaguar for like three weeks, before I replaced the card and it became noticeably faster. QE really kicks @SS

You can get a cheap GeForce2 MX for PC (not MX200 though, but I guess MX and MX400 are both fine) and flash it (that's what I did, Hercules GeForce2 MX for $30) or, which would be even better and faster, a Radeon 8500 for PC (~$100) and flash it. Both works great and is definitely worth it.

If I could do it for as cheap as you did(30 bucks) I'd do it but the problem is I don't have a PC with an AGP slot to flash it in nor do I have an extra PCI video card to use in the PC while doing the flashing. Unless there's some other way to do it I'm kinda stuck.

Dave

You really should do it, OS X feels so much smoother now

AFAIK, there is a Mac OS 9 Flasher. However, I couldn't get it to work, I had to do it in a PC. Don't you have a friend with a PC, who could help you out on this one?

Now that I think about it, I do have a friend who would probably let me do it but I would still need a PCI video card to do it right? Even with that, maybe i will try to do it. any idea where i could hunt down the card that you got, as it seems to be problem free on your machine? Maybe I will do it afterall.

Dave

Remember, if you're not satisfied with the performance improvement after all, you can always sell the nVidia card again, at eBay Which is, btw, the best source for cheap GeForce2 MX PC video cards. You can also get GeForce2 MX for PC which already have been flashed for Macintosh, usually they are like $5-$10 more, but you don't have to flash them on your own if you're either not comfortable with doing this, or don't have the possibility of doing so.

Also, you might wanna check out this, before buying/doing anyting:
http://www.cybercoment.com/macgeforce.htm

FYI, I just checked which card I have: It's the Hercules 3D Prohet II MX400 (meaning it's the GeForce2 MX400 GPU and not, like I initially presumed, the older GeForce2 MX). Firmware 1027 works great for me, the newer (1045, 1055), surprisingly enough, don't.

Nice... but actually, there's something I don't get: Why are so many people here having their Mac ON the desk rather than UNDER it, where it'll be, or at least seem much more quiet?

But honestly, isn't it way too loud to keep this thing on your desk?

Geez how this thread has carried on, it's seen the day the quicksilver was released, the 2002 quicksilvers, and now, the mirrored drive doors (aka AirVentHumpers),

It spans the whole time I've been here too!

Here's to another 3 mac introductions!

Awesome setup, dude.

Word for the wise: get all your heat producing devices (ethernet hubs, transformers, etc) off the floor, and onto a flame-resistent surface so you don't risk fires

I found a Hercules 3d Prophet II Geforce 2mx on ebay and checked the link you gave. It looks like it will work well and a buddy of mine will probably let me flash it in his machine(and if not I can always do it on my old roommate's machine) so I went ahead and bid on it. I'm curious to see if Quartz extreme is all it's cracked up to be.

Any suggestions on how to arrange the monitors when I get the 20.3" LCD from Formac? I do a LOT of things at once (hence the setup, yah) I want to be able to see all of 'em at once--got a lot of work to do in Final Cut Pro and such soon.

This is my brand new MDD mac. You can also see my older ibook to the right.

Before any of you comment on the Compaq monitor, I have to explain. A friend found a hot deal and i got that monitor for 20 dollars after pricematch and rebate at staples. So i couldn't pass on a 20 dollar 17inch Flat CRT.

That mouse is the brand new logitech model. It's really nice and it never skips. It comes with a basestaion that recharges it. It is in the cradle in the picture.

DP 867, 512MB ram, Radeon 9000Pro, 100GB Hard Drive space, SuperDrive, 24X LG burner, USB 2.0 card.

ibook 466SE, 320MB ram, 10GB hard drive.

80 gig firewire, 5GB ipod, keyspan digital remote, and a usb keychain hangin on the wall.

hey all, i couldn't think of a better way to get a pic of my new desk setup so i took 3 pics :-) well the hardware isn't THAT new...but it's a new setup :-)

Dual 1Ghz Quicksilver on the floor, canoscan LiDE30 on the shelf thing above it. got my Onkyo HT-R500 A/V Receiver, and the Onkyo SKS-HT500 speakers, um...airport, if you can see it (our apt is wireless...) my cellphone in the cradle...OSX trashcan courtesy of Target...and an article taped to the wall from the Rockland Journal News about Helix Motorsports. they make mods for the new Mini Cooper and Cooper S

Quicksilver specs:
Dual 1ghz, 1Gig RAM, 180Gig Western Digital Special Edition, Geforce 4Ti

Audio specs:
dolby digital/5.1, pro logic & pro logic II, 100 watts/channel times 5 channels, 150 watt 8" ported sub. A decent entry level receiver with enough power and good sound. for the price, the best speakers you can buy hands down. if you can listen to them sometime, you'll be blown away.

anyway that's it, thought i'd share :-)

aeron chairs stink in my opinion. i thought they were the best you could get, but i have one at work and it causes me a ton of discomfort. we had generic office chairs at my last job and i thought those were the best, most combortable chairs ever. the aeron chairs sure do look nice though. hell, anything would look nice next to three such lovely lcds! yowza. talk about overkill, your desk should be featured on the next season of fox's 24! bravo

loh, the dual 1ghz is a good machine, well mine has been for about 3+ months now. it will be cheaper to get than a new dual 1ghz, and of course, the performance is about the same...now, i don't care about the DDR ram and new architecture, but that's because come 3+ years when i actually consider buying another one, i'll just get a new one. i plan on keeping the Quicksilver as long as possible, but i will have a new machine ina few years.

The quicksilver is also quieter and has less heat problems than the new Duals right? I found some refurb 1ghz QS's for around 2000. Does that sound like a good deal? I have one week to pick a system that I want. Originally I was trying to decide between the QS 867 and the MDD Dual 867. Now Im trying to decide between a MDD Dual 867 for 1700 after shipping and tax or a QS Dual 1ghz for 2000.

Oh boy, I want one of those toilet-seat iBooks too, they look so awesome...

loh...my quicksilver CAN get loud, but that's when i'm doing something taxing, like playing video games for a while, or rendering in maya or just sitting here, browsing, chatting, listening to MP3's, having 10 apps open at once etc. otherwise it sounds just like any normal tower. mine doesn't ahve any high pitched whines coming from it, it doesn't ever sound like a jet. and when i let it rest at night, when i wake up in the morning, i find that the fans have cut down a bit and it's rather quiet. if you get a late-build quicksilver, all the weird bugs are worked out, mine has been stable ever since i got it, no heat issues, no sound + ethernet/ airport issues, and drives over 128gigs work properly :-) even after seeing the new MDD powermacs (which are cool mind you), when i come home to my Q-Dualie, i feel good :-) if the refurbed QS's got a good warranty (as good as refurb can get that is) then go for it. you'll have a jigga-hertz class machine, and after using it you won't FEEL like you got a generation old machine, even though you did...
