...NOT to "back up" my iPhone SMS messages, but to archive them in a manner that gives me access to them as needed. I'd like to be able to save the many hundred conversations I've had for business purposes, but without having to buy a $30 app that does a lot more than just save these text messages.
I have played with the hack method - find the correct chunk of the iPhone backup file, open it with SQL tool and then poke through that to find and potentially save (several more steps) specific messages, but this is "suboptimal," since I'm looking at a whole bunch of messages over a fairly long timeframe.
Any inexpensive/free apps that might do this for me?

I didn't think SMS messages were available to any non-Apple apps due to sandboxing.
Do you have a link to an app on the iTunes App Store that allows this?

No, I don't. One can hunt through the backup files for the phone and open the right one with an SQL tool to find the messages, but it's a pain and slow too. I was hoping to hear from someone who had heard of or used a tool that took the hassle out of it. There are forensic tools, but they aren't cheap or easy to find.

Sounds like a good project.
If it's the backup files you want to peruse, that is doable.
Accessing the messages on the iPhone isn't.

Actually, this app does the trick:
DiskAid - iPhone, iPad, iPod Transfer Software for PC & Mac
I picked up the MacUpdate promo bundle, in which this was included. Haven't found a use for it, myself, yet but I did give it a quick try and was able to access all of the messages on my iPhone, along with plenty of other data. Seems to work as advertised on their site.
