I've been a Mac user for years and have never backed up my hard drive. My last laptop lost its hard drive once. I recently purchased a new PowerBook G4 and I think this time, I will backup my HD with an external drive.

The only thing is, how should I do this? Should I keep the hard drive on continuously or should I only keep it on to backup my PowerBook? I assume that since all hard drives are prone to failure, that my backup could fail. I guess it's highly unlikely that my PBook and backup hard drives would both fail at the same time but what can I do to lessen the chance of an external drive failure? Anything at all?
