I'm happy with the 80gig iPod. I've been waiting for ages for a new one and now it's released at last! I don't care about watching TV on it so I'm happy.

Man, the sites messed up right now. Download link still goes to iTunes 7, product pages to old iPods. Except shuffle, which is out of whack.

As for 640x480, that's lower than DVD rez, but it depends on the encoding as to the overall "quality". H.264 does offer some quality advantages over MPEG2 if the bitrate is reasoanble.

My guess though is that the bitrate will be around 2.5 Mbps for video, which means it will be of good (but probably not Superbit) DVD-level quality.

Dammit, now I have to buy a new iPod.

On the other hand... I get to buy a new iPod now! Whee!

And is it just me, or did they change the color of the music note on the iTunes icon from green to blue?

I prefer the old nano but to each his own. I wouldn't mind having an 8GB one

The improvements to iTunes sound pretty good. iPod syncing with multiple computers is something I've wanted for a loooong time.

They used to change the iTunes icon with every major release, though I think they stopped doing that a couple versions ago (I lost track anyway). I don't like the new icon though, and the UI in iTunes 7 has been uglified a bit. Looks more like a Microsoft app with every new release.

I'm on the fence about the iTV until more is revealed.

The new nano looks so miniesque. I like it, personally. I think today was a great day, except for everyone who wanted a "true' video iPod.

The new shuffle is absolutely fantastic, IMHO. I can't believe the little guy is that small.

The "iTV"...I have yet to decide how cool it is, but I think it's a great start. Hopefully DVR, like someone else said earlier, will be included. If so, this is going to be phenomenal.

iTunes 7...we all knew.

Nope.

Video formats supported: H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Low-Complexity Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

The quality of 640x480 at 1.5 Mbps is pretty good, but yeah, non-Superbit DVD can beat it.

And no love for the older iPods? Or will they just get a firmware update to enable functionality they've had all along?

BTW, the screen is still 320x240.

From the bottom of the itunes store page:

1. Exact resolution depends on aspect ratio

Perhaps for widescreen videos, they are the full 480 tall and wider than 640? We can hope.

Limiting the colored nanos to 4GB was retarded.

I would definitely buy a pink 8GB for my wife to replace her 4GB mini, but there's no space advantage to upgrading now.

I just don't "get" the black-only 8GB. Additionally, it's confusing to the average consumer. I can imagine hoards of folks going to Apple Stores and requesting green 2/8GB nanos, only to be shot down.

True, but full DVD is 720x480. You can go over 640 wide for MPEG4 for example.

Personally, I'm more disappointed the maximum bitrate is 1.5 Mbps. I was hoping for 2.5 Mbps. 1.5 Mbps is pretty good, but there can be a significant difference between the two bitrates for complex video.

Downloaded the new iTunes. I like the old look better. The removed the graphic equalizer and visualizer button at the bottom. Also, the download missing album artwork is sketchy.

All of the updates are good, but not good enough to make me go nuts and upgrade.

I like the new Nanos and shuffles, but the movies and new 5 1/2 Gen iPod are underwhelming. The set top box is an interesting sign of things to come, but is nothing I'm interested in yet. It needs to do Hd and have DVR functionality.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

No they just have a marketing staff clever enough to use a technical statistic in order to wow the layman.

Here's another interesting thing: If I tell Photoshop to increase a 320x image by 200% it goes to 640x.

I don't have PS on this computer on hand. But when you're scaling a photo, you usually determine the scaling factor based on height or width. If you do 200% height, and aspect-ratio is locked, width will be 200% as well.

That doesn't mean the image is 200%; in fact, geometry determines the contrary.

At least the black nano is a worthwhile upgrade -- you get something other than just the color -- unlike the black MacBook.

I think it's too late for the iTV if they make it into a DVR. Will be useless for people with HDTV sets and satellite service. And for some reason, I can't see Apple wanting to compete with TiVo over their 'lucrative' business

Hmm... new iTunes look... possibly a hint of things to come in Leopard?

For those who have not downloaded it yet: no more Aqua-y scrollbars, the Aqua highlight bar in Party Shuffle is different... everything looks very... different. It feels very out-of-place in Tiger, actually.

My verdict, however, has not offically been passed.

My bet is that 16:9 material will be 640x360.

It will be easier to decode, and the 1.5 Mbps will do better on 640x360 than say 740x416 or 720x400.

How does that cover-art thing work? Is there a central data-base that will sync the covers to the music on your mac?

Ok, but if I hit zoom in from 100% to 200% once again, the window is what you'd call 4x bigger.

My point isn't that its wrong. My point is that its a completely technical view of the matter and when you say something like that for marketing, you're definitely spinning.

Upselling the black 8GB?

You don't catch my drift...if I want a 8GB colored nano, I'm not going to just magically buy the black one to get my 8GB.

I'll likely walk out with nothing.

It totally is. It is obvious 10.5 will be "black" oriented (the colour before anyone makes any cracks) and you can see that in iTunes 7.
