Found an HP laptop, what should I do?

I found an older HP laptop sitting in a dumpster, I went to my local computer place (they kinda treated me like i stole it) and tried to boot it up, it wont stay connected to power. it shows power, will kinda boot but makes weird noises.. then cuts power, everything looks good, but what can i do with this thing? is there an easy way to make it into a digital picture fame?
maybe buy one off e-bay with a broken screen?
part out on e-bay?
ideas anybody?

May simply be a broken power jack/solder joint. A lot of HP notebooks had this problem. What is the model of it?

From your description, it sounds fairly worthless- any combination of the mobo/chipset/processor is probably shot.
If the internal HD isn't hosed also, you might get a few bucks for it- or just plop it into an external Firewire case (very cheap for laptop sized drives, and self-powering is very convenient).
The RAM might be worth a few bucks, but you'd have to confirm it still works.
If the keyboard is in good shape, and detaches, it may be e-bay fodder. Someone with the same laptop may need a new one.
If the battery is still good, it may also sell as a spare part, though that's highly ify given who knows how old and close to death it might be even if it did hold a charge.
Doubtful there's anything else of any value in a wrecked laptop.

It doesn't sound like it has that many problems to me. It could be easily fixed. I would put about $50 bucks into it or fix it yourself and give it to someone who needs a computer.
It should have a 700MHz or 750MHz processor. It could most likey run Windows 2000 or some version of Linux really well.
If you don't want it I will take it off your hands. I know a family that could really use something like this.

I have been reading about making a laptop screen into a picture frame, and almost everyone says that it's not cheap, I found some of the controllers on a web site and they retail for about $250 each, it would be cheaper to buy a real LCD screen, or a similar laptop with a cracked screen..
I wish there was an easy and cheap way..
oh well at least it was fun to tear apart, do laptop hard drives click when you turn them over???

NO! That's what you do when the laptop fails on you! This one had already failed, so there's no justice in it. Bad karma.
Aside from the polution issue, it sounds like that laptop was in the right place. HP laptops aren't the easiest to work with, and getting parts for an old one sounds like a great, yet quixotic quest.
