So I read an article that has the PS3 projected to debut at 500-600 Euros (approx $600-$700). I understand the blue-ray technology is expensive, but it seems dumb to increase your unit price so much over the last generations just to include a player that doesn't have an titles out yet, and whose technology will be wasted on the majority of owners.

Anyway, here's the linky to the article.

Sony has stated that the comments made by Sony Computer Entertainment France boss Georges Fornay yesterday regarding the price of the PS3 were "not an indication of PS3 pricing" and were "mistranslated or misunderstood". He was in fact speculating that if the PS3 were to launch between €499 and €599 it would be considered cheap in comparison to dedicated Blu-Ray drives (which start at around €700) but that "current video games machines" (excluding the Xbox 360, natch) would still be significantly cheaper than the PS3.

Even if the price drops by $100, good luck.

This happens every time sony launches hardware. Everyone talks about how crazy expensive it's going to be and how they don't know how they will be able to get the price down. It happened with the PS2 and the PSP. Both came out at standard industry prices. Ok, well, $249 for the PSP is a little high for a handheld, but it is still way below all of the crazy predictions that were floating around before it's release. People were saying that it was going to be $400 - $500.

MY guess for the PS3 is $399. Maybe they will launch at $499, but that would be a stretch.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

It's clever marketing ploy to get attention on their product. If you get everyone talking about how expensive it is, they also sub-conciously think it must be an amazing machine so when it's released at the usual price point, people will be all hyped about it.

Story isn't true according to Sony

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=15937

"At no time did he suggest or indicate a specific price point or price range for PS3, and any reports that he did so are incorrect.

"He summarised by saying that PS3 would be expensive when one looked at the current price of a video games machine, at far below 500 Euros, but extremely good value when looking at the BD and HD technology inside," he concluded.

Exactly, it is also a good way to get Microsoft to release the Xbox 360 at a higher price point.

At this point the price of the PS3 is pure speculation. By looking at the amount of technology included in the machine, it could easily debut at $500 or more.

Heck blu ray players are $1500 right now. Remember the PS3 will be sold at a loss.

Huge loss. Games and accessories won't be able to make up a %70 deficit.

If I had to guess, judging by what sony kept spewing about pricing for some time, id expect $500 to $600. I dont think the market can bear anything over $600 though.
They will *supposedly* have 6 or 7 million to distribute woldwide this fall, they will sell them all, I'm sure. The GDC videos look absolutely staggering. The stuff shown running realtime is clearly a leap over anything being done on the 360.

Does it matter? I don't care if they lost 120% off every sale. I don't make money from Sony making money. The games aren't any better if they make money.

WHO CARES. You should be laughing all the way to Best Buy!

Not unless it's $100 a controller.
