Here is the Virgin press release:

LAPTOP BATTERY RESTRICTIONS
Customers wishing to use an Apple or Dell laptop on board can only do so once the laptop battery serial number has been checked by a member of the Cabin Crew.

- If the battery is permitted for use, the laptop may be used as normal on board, with no further restrictions.

- If however the battery is identified as being from the affected batch as identified by Apple and Dell, the battery must be removed. In cabins where the seats are fitted with In Seat Power Supplies, leads/adapters will be offered. Where no ISPS is provided or no laptop leads/adapters are available, the use of these affected laptops is prohibited.

Any removed or spare batteries must be individually wrapped/protected and placed in your Carry On Baggage. This is limited to two batteries per passenger.

Virgin Atlantic is in communication with Apple and Dell. As soon as this safety issue is resolved these restrictions will be lifted.

WTF Apple? How did we land in the same class as Dell??! We pay good money for being a level above.

Apple QA strikes again. OK Sony QA, but it looks like Apple will have to doublecheck every component they put in one of their computers themselves as well.. not just taking Sony's or whoever's word for it.

I hope Sony pays dearly for this blunder. This is a blanket ban on all Macs, regardless of whether the battery is from a faulty line or not. Any Mac laptop.

Grr

Who needs a laptop on Virgin when you have all those hot stewardesses to look at?

Of course they would.

Virgin Atlantic has become the third airline [after Korean Air and Qantas] to restrict the use of Apple and Dell laptop batteries on its flights. Passengers who want to take their Inspirons, Lattitudes, iBooks, PowerBooks, MacBooks or MacBook Pros onto the carrier's planes are asked to remove the battery first.

They really just check two things:

* is it an Apple
* is it a portable

Because they were using the same battery that dell uses. You can thank sony for this mess and it is affecting other laptops like toshiba too.

This airline madness is getting WAY out of hand. They should just ground all planes forever. Then they wouldn't have to deal with inspecting every single persons belongings before they get on a flight. Lets go back to walking and horse drawn carriages.

I'm a Virgin virgin. They have hot stewardesses?

And if they're hot, those laptops might be convenient -- if you know what I mean.

Ah the nerd patrol right on schedule. I can read dates on press releases just fine. However, I don't really care since this only bothers the uber-nerds on this forum and interests the normal people who only hear about it here first. Those who have lives. So you can kindly go stuff it.

The only thing worse than you, would be the poor schmuck who posts after you complaning about the same anal thing. How pathetic can one become.. oh.. mduell...

Do you think it is the German part of you or is this something you picked up in the US that makes you this nerdy anal-retentive?

Not as much as the *third* person who posts about the same thing as you.. but still yes. A nerd, poor schmuck and anal-retentive.

Nothing outdated about this, since Apple portables are still under scrutiny. If you have the right serial no. then you may use your laptop battery, otherwise not.

Apples are still under surveilance and you'll be bothered by the crew if you attempt to take a Mac laptop aboard. On top of all the bothers already in place.

Here's another story on the ban relaxation - DailyTech - Virgin Atlantic Lifts Ban on Unaffected Notebook Batteries

Apparently it was Dell that contacted Virgin about relaxing the rules.
