I've been wondering about this.

I suppose my computer would have to have access to cell towers, 3G? E?...?

Any apps out there that would enable me to text my wife on her iPhone? or any other mobile phone (Black Berry, etc.)? From my laptop?

I thought usually a simple email in this form:

<cell number>@<provider>

would send a text to that phone on the cell phone user's network. Check the provider's web site. I'm sure they would have support info on doing this.

iphone sms text application

You can also send text messages from iChat on your Mac. Simply choose Send SMS from the File menu, enter a phone number and a message
There you are ... iChat.

Steve's method works for AT&T. It's (cell number)@text.att.net. A fairly long list of standard address suffixes is available here. Or just use iChat...

Thanks for the site Warrior. Now I know what the problem is. It says:

Note: Only US mobile phones can be messaged.

Sigh.. back to lumber jacking.

I haven't found reference to Canadian carriers specifically in this issue. Which carrier are you interested in getting messages to? If iChat won't be helpful to you, the other methods should be.
