Is there a way to change the default tone? I can never hear it. Also, is there a way to forward text to multiple people? Thanks.

No. Not currently user-changeable. The incoming text message alert tone's softness is the biggest of my beefs with the device. Missing text messages on my $600 phone is a joke, considering you can get usable alert tones on any free phone.
Luckily it's software fixable. Hopefully it's on Apple's list of upcoming upgrades and the wait won't be much longer.

Yep, this drives me absolutely nuts as well. It needs to be user-selectable, louder and vibrate a few times.

Totally agree - the lack of sound customization throughout the OS needs to be addressed.
