Wow, this movie is different. I'm a huge fan of the series, so I just got back from an early showing. I'm still not sure exactly what I think. I enjoyed it, but it was weirder than I could ever have imagined. It's very dark compared to the first two, much more graphic and much more trippy. It's like the writers said, "**** it, this is the last one. Let's drop acid and make an arthouse action flick."
Anybody else seen it yet?
Spoilerish thoughts:
Wow. Norrington, Swann, Mercer, Becket and Davy Jones all offed in the course of one movie, plus Will stabbed and brought back as an undead ferryman of souls. This after a grand total of pretty much two major deaths (Barbossa and Jack) in the last two movies. It even starts with a kid getting killed. The tone was so different, I'm still trying to wrap my head around it.
I liked Keira Knightley being the badass pirate king in this one. The last one annoyed me with how girly they made Elizabeth.
After Will became the new Davy Jones, I thought he was cursed for eternity and the post-credits scene was just him coming to meet his son for a day. The Wikipedia article on the movie says that some line of Davy Jones' suggests the curse may have been broken. Did anybody else get that from the film?
Also, as a testament to how confusing the movie was: After it got out, some girls next to me were talking, and one of them was talking about how she knew all along that Elizabeth was Calypso. I wanted to grab her and go, "Did you not watch the last 45 minutes or what?" I knew it was Tia Dalma from the beginning, though, because they totally gave it away with the locket in the last movie.

I didn't care too much for the first ones, but the apparent trippy/weirdness of this one is uplifting.

Watched it last night and I enjoyed it. I agree that it was a lot darker than the first two; which made it more appealing.
Chuckit. It was after midnight and we were tired. We didn't stick around for the after credits scene. Could you provide a link to the lines about the curse being lifted?
I would've liked more Chow Yun Fat in the movie.
I was thinking. Why couldn't Will stab Elizabeth and then ask her to join his crew.
Pirates of the Caribbean 4: The fountain of Youth. Do you think they're going to make a sequel?

I loved the first one, but the second just got too weird for its own good. People with shellfish coming out of their face is just...I dunno.

Here's what I read: Elizabeth Swann - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The actual scene is as follows:
It says "10 Years Later…" Elizabeth is standing on the edge of a cliff. Beside her is a boy with long hair who's obviously supposed to be Will Turner III. They stare at the setting sun, there's a green flash and Elizabeth smiles.

Well, if I recall, all of the cast and crew have said they're open to the idea of a sequel as long as it isn't done half-assed. Personally, I'll watch as long as Depp is involved in some way. I trust him not to make a movie unless he actually believes it will be good.

Hey Chuckit
The deal of being the Captain of the Flying Dutchman is that for every 10 years at sea, you get one day on land.
I enjoyed it. I had a few good laughes. The story was interesting and busy, but I think it was meant to be that way.
I could have seen more Chow Yun Fat as well. Keith Richards role was a little dissappointing, but even getting him to remember a line with three words is an amazement in itself. The scene with Jack in the locker had me rolling though

By killing (stopping?) the heart of the Flying Dutchman's captain and replacing it with your own causes you to become the captain. Doomed to spend 10 years ferrying souls (to the underworld?), and then you get 1 day on land.
I understood it that Davey Jones and his crew became all sea animal because they shunned their responsibility of ferrying souls. Correct?
Chuckit, thanks for that.

51% at Rotten Tomatoes, or 40% from the Cream of the Crop.
52/100 at Metacritic.com, both from the critics and from the members there.
I don't want to see it, but my GF really wants to go. However, since I'm not expecting much, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.
P.S. Thanks guys for the correctly used spoiler tags.

That wasn't a joke, that was a Tip of the Hat to a quality thread.
I suppose using the spoiler tag was unneccessary for the comment above.
Oh and:
Yeah, for these last two, too.

My biggest gripe was that the theater was full of middle and high school girls. At the first sight of Depp, I swear the tempature went up 10 degrees.

I liked it. A little too long (but it coulda just been that I saw it so late and didn't get out of the theater until after 1). But I didn't think the story was overly-complicated as the critics said, and I do like the different tone the movie had about it. I'm trying to rank the movies in order of my favorites, but as I'm typing this I cannot decide which I liked best. Each of the 3 had their major faults and major good points, but I guess if I HAD to choose, I'd say 1,3,2 in that order...hmmm...I still think I'm with Chuckit, I need to digest the movie before making any rash conclusions.

Did no one else notice the similarity bwetween the boy at the start that got hung and Will and Elizabeth's son at the end of the movie? I certainly thought they were the same..making the start of the film actually occur chronologically after the rest of the films events.

I haven't seen it... but I was debating whether I want to go to the theaters and watch it or if I just want to wait until I can rent it. I do want to find out what happens but if it's darker and whatnot as you say I might want to wait and watch it at home. I didn't look at any spoilers but just wanted to get people's thoughts about it. This way I can do stuff while I'm watching it if I get bored as you guys did.

If you're the sort of person who likes seeing movies in theaters, go see it in the theater. If you're not the sort of person who cares, don't bother. It's cheaper renting anyway. Judging from the fact that you're considering doing stuff while you watch it, I'm going to guess the latter.

Thanks for the advice. I do like going to theaters but I was just debating whether I should spend the money now or later. I'm usually the type of person that gets restless unless I'm really into something... And some movies are just better seeing in theaters or are renters... just wanted your opinions before I went out and spent money now.

I liked it, it was too long, but just right for a rainy afternoon. Pretty much made for a big screen experience, renting and watching on an itsy-bitsy screen might not make it.

I liked it, and since I used the loo before I got my seat, I didn't find it too long. In fact, with the first scenes, it dragged me right in, and had me there until the very last frame (I actually saw the end leader on the last reel). I liked it a great deal, in fact.
I second that it starts out WAY dark, and that it is very action-filled. But it's a Jerry Bruckheimer film, so what do you expect-quiet introspection? I think they went above and beyond with the effects, because there were some real eye-poppers in there, and not the obvious creature characters, either. Overall well worth my money.
Plus there were great trailers for "Transformers" and "Live Free or Die Hard" before it started. I'm really looking forward to later this summer!

I didn't understand why Jack didn't stab the heart sooner, making himself the new eternal sailor. That was his stated plan, and I don't see a reason for deception.

He was confused about how the fight between Davey Jones and Will was going to turn out, especially when Davey didn't seem to be as cowed as Jack had expected when he saw Jack holding the heart and that broken sword. And it was more dramatic, of course. Having Davey Jones kill Will with the sword he made for Norington was a nice piece of work too.

I think that Jack had intended to be a martyr of sorts, sacrificing himself so that Will wouldn't have to choose between his father and Elizabeth. But as soon as Will got stabbed, his resolve wavered, and I think he was debating whether he should take Elizabeth for himself or whether he wanted to go through with the idea of having Will stab the heart and live on.
Just my 2¢ on that; could be wrong.

Loved the first one, liked the second, was bored by the third. None of the characters seemed particularly interesting or worth rooting for. Rush was best as Barbarossa as well and Jack Sparrow wasn't the same Jack as he had been in the other movie.
The fat guy and the 1-eyed guy got old quick and it seemed that they left important stuff out of the movie while still keeping it 45 minutes too long.

Having seen the third again, I think it's better than the second, but the first is still the best.

Jack was definitely different in the first. I thought the third movie's portrayal was closer to the original than the second one was, though. I like my Jack scheming and crazy.

What stuff did you think they left out? I didn't get that feeling.

Did anyone happen to catch the reference to the Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band (LSJUMB) toward the end of the music credits? It caught my eye but i couldn't catch the whole thing. Or perhaps I was just hallucinating after three hours in a leaky movie theatre.
