After pulling off (and lucking out - thank you, Brazil) a nearly-impossible advancement in the Confederation's Cup, the U.S. soccer team is leading 1-0 against Spain going into half-time.

This thread is sure to get only one or two other posters who are interested, but I'm freaking out a bit.

Not doing this (yet):

yea, i'm watching it. after the recent world cup qualifiers and first two group matches, it's nice to see them not playing like complete idiots, for a change. beasley should never be allowed to play again.

still 45 minutes to go, though.

not all who wander are lost.

Beasley has been a huge disappointment for a long time now. I wish we'd focus on developing someone else.

I wish I could watch it here at work. I'm following the Gamecast in the background while I prepare some notes for tonight.

Alot of people think that Spain could win the next World Cup. If they get beaten, this would be a MAJOR upset.

Reminds me of a story my friend told me. His dad's from Hungary and is an avid football fan. He had just finished watching the Olympics when the Chinese had sat down in the fields in protest. Having served in WWII and growing up in Hungary, he was a real tough SOB. Typical grizzled veteran guy, you could put a cigar out in his eye and he wouldn't even flinch.

His 6-year-old grandkid was playing in his first football game. My friend's dad is on the sidelines yelling at his grandkid, telling him how to kick, where to move ... with occasional obscenities. Mind you all the other parents are there with their little kids listening to this 80-year-old man barking at his grandkid.

So like many little kids, he got frustrated, cried a little bit, then sat down in the field because he didn't want to play anymore.

At about that time his grandfather was jumping up and down yelling, "What are you doing?! Don't sit down like a damn Chinaman! Get out and play!"

Of course no one knew that he was talking about the Olympics.

I just love the live text stuff from the BBC :

2050: Jay DeMerit adds another £5m on to his price tag with a brilliant block to deny Albert Riera, before Tim Howard saves Cesc Fabregas's low shot and then Sergio Ramos's near-post drive. US are under serious pressure here.

I would've loved to have seen that play out in person.

From ESPN's Gamecast:

Bradley really has worked his knackers off.
Great play by Dempsey, hanging onto the ball until Donovan is ready to receive, Donovan's cross is decent, but Ramos, instead of belting it away, takes a touch. His touch is rubbish, and Dempsey is on hand tro slide the ball in. Well well well.
Fabregas is replaced by Cazorla. Until the point I hadn't realised that he was sporting a yellow streak down the middle of his head like a skunk. What a moron, and I apologise for depriving you of that information until now.
British for sure. Hilarious though.

Was the Bradley red card undeserved? The ESPN Gamecaster says it wasn't malicious in the slightest.

Wish I could see this...

Does anyone think that foul warranted a red card?

HAHAAA...more:

Mata's cross is sent behind yet again by Onyewu. They've allowed numerous corners, and rightly so, because Spain haven't really come close from any of them, and that's the truth, Ruth.
The moustache doesn't help, but Del Bosque looks very hangdog

Can the Bradley red card be appealed?

Exactly, but not just "rumored contender." Reigning Euro champions and steady #1-ranked Spain.

Luck or not, this is quite a big deal.

Damn, completely missed the game. Funny part: today was the first day I had a new DVR, and I forgot to set it. Foiled!

i remember having to get up at like 3am to watch the 2002 WC game against portugal on the spanish channel because none of the games were covered on US channels. i had the same feeling watching that as i did in the first half against brazil. tough loss, but it was nice to see them earn some respect and become the cinderella side. they had been in a really bad bit of form recently in world cup qualifying, so to see them get their legs back in a major tournament was also great to see.
