It used to be that touching any key would release the screen saver. Or moving the mouse.

Today, the SS doesn't release unless I click a mouse button. Pressing and holding keys on the keyboard will not work. Moving the mouse will not work.

I'd long figured it was something wonky with my install, but it's persisted across several OS versions. Is this true for everyone? Screen Savers are now sticky, and only a mouse button will release the glue?

I am still on 10.12 and my screensaver stops with a mouse move or key click. could it be the particular screen saver?

Seems unlikely - I'm using the supplied savers. Flurry at the moment. Nothing obvious in Sys Prefs that would cause this. Guess I'll dig through my Library/Preferences for saver references.

Weird memory from way back, but... didn't Caps Lock disable keyboard wake from screensaver back in the olden days? I remember because there were screensavers that were complete games, and you had to hit Caps Lock first to be able to play.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

No dice on Caps Lock. It wasn't engaged, and engaging it did not change anything. I didn't find anything useful in my Preferences folder either.

Just checked in another user account. Same behavior - a mouse button is required to release from saver.

Specifically, one click of a mouse button by itself does not release. Instead it restores the expected behavior. A 2nd mouse click will release saver. Or a mouse movement. Or any key press. But only after the first mouse click.

Do you have a standard mouse?

what does control panel say for mouse settings?

Huh. At work, 10.12.6 also, but dual monitors and weird mouse. Hot corners don't work.

10.14.4 here, though the problem has been present back to at least 10.12 - maybe 10.10 (i skipped El Capitan).

MX518 (original, not legacy) plugged directly into Mac Pro.
Matias quiet pro keyboard, plugged directly into Mac Pro.

Mouse CP shows settings for a generic mouse.

The lying "Scroll direction" box is unchecked, because I want natural, traditional scrolling direction. I'd check the box if I wanted backwards scrolling.
Tracking speed: mid-setting.
Scrolling speed: a bit above the middle.
Double-click speed: a bit above the middle.
Primary mouse button: Left.

Hot corners work fine.
