I need to run linux to use ddrescue command of -d
But I am in search of a live cd that either has that app or a live cd that at least works on the macbook pro.

Might you know of one, or have had to try this before?

Because it does not have the direct access feature on osx. And I did try and patch it. No dice.

For the others: Does ubuntu have ddrescue installed ? Or at the very least gcc?

And FYI you can 'install' things when booted from the live disc but they won't alter your hard drive in any way.

Here's where you can get an Ubuntu Live CD. Can I assume that this is not as much for "rescue" as for forensics?

Oh no it's a rescue. That sucker wont work with anything but ddrescue. It just that on osx without testing -d it's waaaaay to slow as in 512/bytes per sec

So booting to linux to test out -d looks to be the only option atm
