I'm not under NDA, because I know nothing about iPhone programming, but as a user, a few thoughts came to mind regarding the dearth of some development:

1) there is no utility to control wireless, (WiFi vs. 3G vs. EDGE, etc.) by location or network. This has been in existence on other platforms as far as I know, and likewise built-in on some.

2) haptic feedback (e.g., vibration while typing for pseudo keyboard feel) utility.

3) A plug-in/extension platform for functionality.

So the question is: what is the likelihood or not of these kinds of enhancements coming in the future?

Is it likely that Apple sandboxes system-level control to not allow any of the above-mentioned functionality?

Thanks.

1) Can't happen.
2) Off limits. But sound as feedback wouldn't be.
3) Those are sort of into the gray area of what's allowed and not. My guess is that most of those sort of things aren't off limits, but they wouldn't make it into the App Store.

The sandbox that Apple gives devs to play in is very constrained. However, it is set up in such a way that even if your idea doesn't exactly fit into the given parameters, then Apple may bend the rules and let an app through (NetShare). There are a number of apps on the Store that don't match up exactly (I'm thinking of Scrabble and AIM).

NetShare was banned actually. It is a very limited sandbox.

NetShare was let through though and may still be updated via the App Store.

Nope. No more updates through the app store. Apple has banned it.

I got it; and in a pinch, worked very well. So very limited, but it seems developers have been very creative (read: NetShare).

I wonder if the App Store will become the death of the platform.

There is also no document editor for Word, Excel, etc. I imagine that is part of the agreement as well.

So, this causes the imagination to wander, and without any great leaps or anything it can only be assumed that Apple is working on all this stuff for themselves, or an exclusive third party. Or Steve has gone completely mad.
