Samsung has revealed two cameras it will be presenting at CES next week. The Galaxy Camera 2 is an Android-based point-and-shoot device that appears to offer a few upgrades when compared to the original device, while the NX30 mirrorless camera appears to be more a successor to the NX20 rather than the NX300, and is accompanied by a couple of new removable lenses.

The Galaxy Camera 2 has a 16.3-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor with 21x optical zoom and a pop-up Xenon flash. Using a quad-core 1.6GHz processor with 2GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage, the Android 4.3 camera has a rear-mounted 4.8-inch touchscreen display, and is capable of recording Full HD video and 768x512-resolution video at 120fps. Aside from offering various photography modes and filters, the Galaxy Camera 2 can share images over Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi and NFC, including Samsung's new "Tag & Go" smartphone connection feature, be remotely controlled from a mobile device, and can share content with online services. Much like a smartphone, it can connect to and install apps from the Google Play store, and is supplied with a 2,000mAh battery.

The NX30 opts for a 20.3-megapixel sensor with an ISO range between 100 and 25,600, a 1/8000-second shutter speed and 9fps continuous shooting. Sporting a rear-mounted and hinged 3-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen display and a tiltable 1,037k-dot electronic viewfinder, it shares the same Tag & Go NFC and Wi-Fi system that the Galaxy Camera 2 uses, is able to perform 3D still image and video recording, and thanks to its Wi-Fi connection, can share files to a range of online services and can be remotely controlled via an app.

A par of lenses have also been introduced. The 16-50mm F3.5-F5.6 Power Zoom ED OIS lens has a 31mm frame, weighs 111 grams, includes silent auto focusing, and uses a new "Electro zoom with a seesaw type button," said to help make zooming easier. The second lens, the 16-50mm F2-F2.8 S ED OIS, is said to be the first in a premium "S" series, with the bright aperture said to give it the brightest 3x zoom among equivalent class lenses. An "ultra-precise stepping motor" (UPSM) in the lens is said to be three times more precise compared to conventional stepping motors in controlling focus on subjects.

Samsung has yet to reveal when the cameras and lenses will be released, as well as for how much. These details may be released at or shortly after CES.

Haven't read up on mirrorless cameras, but curious- what exactly are you seeing in the view finder?

The normal viewfinder is replaced by an eyepiece containing a small display, mimicking what would usually be seen. Sure, it's not much of a step up from just looking at the bigger screen on the back of the camera itself, but it does allow for alternative viewfinder interfaces. One camera I tried a while back included a line acting as a spirit level, telling me where the horizon was in relation to the camera so it can be correctly oriented...
