The problem with subscriptions is that, after a year of subscribing and you decide to stop, you have nothing to show for it. For the $200 or so you spent during that year, you could have bought 202 songs from iTunes permanently.

You mean Cable TV, satellite radio, and movie rentals. Yes.
Regular TV and radio are still free. I buy DVDs.

All of these are bad comparisons to music. Music for the most part you listen to over and over. I rarely watch a movie over and over, and never watch broadcast tv over and over. The only movies we buy now are kids movies that they watch a number of times.
Satellite radio is a nice luxury. It is pretty cheap, and has a huge variety. It allows you to put less thought into what you are going to listen to next. And exposes you to music you normally wouldn't be exposed to.

Except when you're under a bridge or in a tunnel.

I never had my satellite radio cut out on me when I owned it. As has been mentioned, there are a lot of repeaters even in mid sized cities.

The Sirius signal cuts out often on our home unit. The only way to get a consistent signal is to have the antenna outside of the house, unobstructed.
