I'm getting this serious bug on my G5 running 10.4.11

Every few minutes the Finder pops up a new window. If I have other Finder windows open at the time they all get shut down when the new window pops up (as if the Finder has crashed and restarted itself very quickly). This bug is also breaking any transferring, burning or other Finder based operation I'll be doing at the time.

What is going on here and what could the solution be to fix it?

What "new window" keeps opening?

It certainly sounds like what you think is the case: the Finder is repeatedly crashing. There could be something on your desktop that is corrupt or bad Finder preferences (try trashing them from the Preferences folder in the Library folder and the Finder will automatically recreate them). Or have you installed any apps that add commands to contextual menus (right-click menus)? Try removing these.

The new window that pops open is a default new Finder window showing the root directory.

I've trashed the prefs and have no extensions. I've Googled a bit and a similar bug seems to have been around in 10.2 upwards but can't find a solution as yet apart from a clean install

Have you tried this in a new user account to see if it's system-wide?

Do you have Stuffit Expander installed? If so, disable or remove its Contextual Menu Item.
