I just replaced my dead IBM DeskStar 37.5 GB hard drive with a brand new Western Digital 2000 Enhanced IDE "Caviar" drive.

Dropped it into the FireWire enclosure (from La Cie), plug it in, use Disk Utility to erase it, and it shows up as a 127 GB drive.

Why?

What's the magic needed to have Mac OS X see all 200 GB, in one partition or several?

Many, many thanks.

I have an external FW 160gb maxtor divided into two equal partitions and have been using it for many months.
Disk Utility sees the entire drive. I have read about some IDE limitations, possibly it is the bridge chip in the LaCie case. However, I thought those limitations were on the internal IDE controller.

Nah, the problem is with the bridge chip in the FireWire enclosure. You need one which is advertisied as supporting ATA-6, required for addressing every bit of large volumes.

Thanks Coxy! I thought it had something to do with the bridge chip, knowing the ATA-6 spec is the key. I guess I bought the right drive, or I mean enclosure.
Isn't the internal IDE bus hosed for supporting this in most or all current Macs?

Can I swap the chip on the board in my La Cie enclosure?

If not, where is the best place to buy an enclosure with a FireWire controller which'll handle a 200 GB drive?

I doubt you can just switch a chip. I would search the hardware section for more information or google it.

Here and here is some more information you might find helpful.
