AAAAARRRRGGHHHHHH!!!!!!
For some %#$$&@-ing reason, MS Word is lagging about one second behind my actions, and it's driving me nucking futs!
Scrolling is a nightmare, and editing is almost as bad. I have no idea what's causing it. It's certainly not memory usage, and it's not my scroll settings in the mouse properties because Firefox scrolls like a dream.
Does ANYONE have any idea what this could be? I turned off all the Word stuff like live word counts and such, but to no avail.
I HATE MICROSOFT!
Thanks....

if you turned off spell check and grammar check, I'm not sure what it could be.
try checking activity viewer or top to see if it is indeed office that's chewing up resources.

Oh, and if anyone can tell me WTF it is that I don't seem to be able to open any attachments I receive via Entourage e-mail, I'd be mighty grateful, too.
In particular, it's Word files.

Sorry, but I don't know what any of that means. I'm new to Mac.
However, everything else is just roaring along, so I don't think it's system-related....
BTW, what part of NYC are you in? I grew up in Flushing.

Generic M$ fixes that may be worth trying (It may be wise to first copy your settings as many/most will be lost):
With no Office applications running, (turn off Entourage's Office Notifications, too)
Go to your Home Folder > Library > Preferences.
Delete the file com.microsoft.Word.plist. Then open the subfolder Microsoft, and delete each file with 'word' it its name.
Also delete the files:
 Carbon Registration Database
 Microsoft Component Preferences
 Microsoft Office Settings
 MS Office ACL
 Office Font Cache
 Office Registration Cache
 Office First Run
 Proofing Tool Preferences
Also copy the Custom Dictionary file to another location and then delete it from there.
Rename your Normal template to "old template" (do a Finder search to make sure no more "Normal" templates exist)--Word will create a new one.

Do what Pendragon said.
Activity Monitor is a a program that shows what resources are being used by what applications (CPU %, RAM, etc.) - it's in /Applications/Utilities/
I'm in manhattan - live in the east village, work in midtown.

I figured out the Entourage problem. Apparently, the e-mail had not "downloaded fully", whatever that means. Once I transferred them to my permanent archive (or downloaded the whole message), the attachments opened up perfectly.
As for the other thing, I'll try it and let you know.

Well, that seems to have helped, but the scrolling is still jerky. If I try to highlight several pages, it "jerks" between pages.
Could this have anything to do with the fact that the document is highly formatted with lots of tables?

Here's what I have to speed up Word ...
To Speed up Word ...
1. Disable Live Word Count (Preferences: View)
2. Disable Quartz Text Smoothing (Preferences: General)
3. Disable WYSIWYG font and style menus (Preferences: General)
Hope you solve your issue ...

I'm going to try that. The first fix didn't work as well as I thought it had.
Oh, and what rezrez says is true, too. HIGHLY annoying!
ETA: I turned off Word Count and WYSIWYG. Also turned off animations. I can't find Quartz Smoothing, though...

Resurecting this thread.
My lagging problem continues, and the "Download entire message" question stands.
Anyone?

Are you using an Exchange account by chance?

Negative.
All e-mail is accessed via Web. Lag exists when hooked up or not.

So within Entourage, if you go to:
Tools > Accounts > Double-Click on your Account > Options >
Is the option to "Partially receive messages over 20kb" enabled? If so, disable that.
