Ok this might sound a bit dumb, if the Ipod shuffles battery is completly run down will it still function as a usb key? Or does the device allways need to have some battery life in reserve?

Since you charge the Shuffle via the USB plug, I would assume that it will immediate begin charging while when you plug it in. So regardless of what you're doing with itmusic or datathere's going to be juice going into it.

Also, the memory in the shuffle is flash. So, even if the batter is dead, it still keeps the data in memory. It doesn't work like memory in your computer where if there is no power, it loses the data.

well, it wont charge if you plug it into a "low power" usb plub (i.e. one on your keyboard instead of on the back of your mac)

In those cases I'm not sure whether, if its completely out of juice, it will act like a "key," though I'm not sure exactly what you mean by that...

When I plug my iPod shuffle to my iBook and while it is updating the playlist in iTunes, is it charging at the same time?
