New 3G features via firmware upgrade?

I have a current 16GB iPhone. It seems to me that unless Apple has changed the actual hardware in the 8GB 3G phone, one should be able to upgrade the software / firmware to at least get the cut & paste feature and perhaps the landscape keyboard.
I hope they don't handicap us out of the newer features if all it really needs a friendly neighborhood firmware update.
The lack of cut and paste on this phone has always been a real problem in using it.
We got a bunch of new software updates today like Safari 4, but no iphone update.....

Considering that the iPhone 3.0 software won't be released until June 19th and that Apple have already announced that it will be free for all iPhone owners, and that the only differentiating features will be video capture, Voice Control, autofocus camera, and compass…
…I wouldn't go fetch the rope just yet.

I was hoping they would do that, I got my phone back in October, have awhile before I upgrade.

I dont understand why Voice Control isn't available on the 3G (post 3.0 upgrade)? Is this to force the purchase of a 3Gs?

Probably not. The 3GS has a faster CPU and more RAM. Here's a good explanation:
