Do Apple people read what members post on MacNN? (and other mac sites)
Are they taking the temperature of their hardcore audience?
After all, the hardcore Mac fans facilitated the word of mouth campaigns (the whole "switch" campaign would not have worked without them. That's free viral advertising. The people who helped carry the company through two hefty downturns.
How important is it still for their market research? (or, looking at their most recent iMac design disaster, who are they listening to now?

I'm sure they check in on our bantering once in a while, but that doesn't mean our opinions have much of any sway over product decisions. Perhaps in unusual circumstances, but not very often.

In a way, probably. I'd guess they contract a monitoring service that specializes in campaign penetration. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if gauging and quantifying web audience reaction was a feature.
Why don't you type a greeting to Steve Jobs and see if he gives you a wink and a boom in January?

I think they used to have someone monitor the forums, and I know that Woz used to check us out occasionally. How do I know? Because on the WozCam forum I mentioned once that the snare drum in his study looked like it had been signed by Ringo Starr -- the next day it was set up where we could see it in the light. The WozCam forum generated other responses, too, but that was years ago.

I have received Private Messages from Apple about being selected for appleseed. So I guess _someone_ at Apple is on these forums.

Other companies dream of the word of mouth-campaigns Apple is getting.
Viral marketing: you put out the message, and it travels and multiplicates all by itself, like computer virus. Apple only has to post in an apple forum, and go!
Threads like "New Macs tomorrow" could have been started by an Apple employee. It's a typical teaser campaign. After eight or nine tomorrows, some people get really so jazzed up they talk in their sleep.
Have you ever heard of Hewlett-PackardNN? Sonyrumors.com? Dellinsider?

Was free. Now it's gone. Never to be seen again.
Off to join its brother and sister apps that could not

Maybe they just use it to create buzz, but not to get ideas.
After all, the iMac has gone to the middle of the road.
I also think the iMac is and and .

I'd be willing to bet that there is someone at Apple that's only job is to go online and see what people are saying.
I know that video game companies hire people to watch all of the popular message boards and gauge consumer interest in things. It's very very common.
I used to post quite a bit on a popular Blues hockey site, and I know for a fact that several of the actual players used to read up on what we were saying almost every day. We found this out from one player who was personal friends with someone who posted on the board. Pretty sure team management would send cronies to check on us as well.
I would be shocked if Apple wasn't doing this as well. Partially to get feedback and partially to look for leaks and NDA violations and the such.

Is the concern for the balls/stars simply playful banter, or does it really matter to you guys?

In case the mods are listening and taking orders, I would like 5 test tubes. I would like to attract scientists so that I can peddle my stool samples with greater success.

Who knows. Maybe one of the iMac engineers was insulted by Ca$h while visting this board and decided to throw in a slower graphics card as "payback."
