I know we have some medical professionals in here, so I figured I'd mine you guys for some experience on using a program called eFilm made by Merge and packaged with Eklin digital radiography products. Specifically, I'm wondering
- How you all share DR images with other practices or practitioners: online (GoldenGate?), email, or other solution
- If you've encountered any issues sharing
- What file format you share in (eFilm's format, jpeg, or tiff)
- and any other knowledge you want to share
I ask because I'm doing some free work and consulting for a practice (friend of the family with simple needs) that is looking to electronically share eFilm files with consulting doctors. Right now I'm thinking — again, a basic/simple solution that they can handle without IT support — export to jpeg or tiff and just email to the practice or consult doc. But I've never worked with it in the medical world so any insight you all have is appreciated.

HIPAA would eat their lunches if you do it the way you suggest in your second paragraph. You need to encrypt the images to protect patient information. PGP is a good choice for this, by the way.
I'd go with TIFF hands down over JPG; you need to maintain the resolution and detail in diagnostic images.

Oh yeah, just to update - it's for a veterinary practice so I'm less worried about patient encryption during transit.

Yeah, that would be less important, but for the purpose of generalization, any medical information should be protected. Could be your vet treats pets of rich and/or famous people, and their pet's medical information could be useful to bad people for doing bad things to the rich/famous owners of those pets...
