I have a Brother HL1430 installed and connected on a windows machine which is on my network. I've shared it as well.

But how do I install it on Mac OSX?

I tried to install it with print-centre:

- via IP

But when I select Brother as the model, the HL1430 is not an option to choose from (I installed the drivers...)
I'm Appleless and unhappy: tiBook is dead and iPod stolen

ok, tried the following tutorial...

But ran in two problems:

First: what do I have to fill in in the following line:

smb://userass@workgroup/server/sharename

Which user and which pass? The windows computer doesn't use a login (windows 98)

Secondly: I installed the printer drivers, but my printer doesn't show up when I select Brother as the printer model

First off, in OSX you don't use 'via IP', you need to hold down option when you click 'add printer' using print center.

You'll then get an extra category called 'advanced'. Under that, select 'Windows Printer via SAMBA'.

Under Device name, you can name the device anything- it's not the shared name, it's the ID of the printer connection for OSX- so put something in you'll recognize on a print list.

The addy- if no password is used, you can use:

smb://username@server/sharename

Username= whatever name you choose.
Server= the full network name of the computer. (Found in MY COMPUTER properties/Computer name.)

Sharename= the exact name of the printer as shared in Windows.

As for the device drivers- with my own Epson printers, the actual device name drivers don't show up for network printing, I just use 'Epson Stylus Color Series CUPS 1.1'

The generic nature of that doesn't seem to matter, it prints fine.

I believe, the actual printer driver is handled by the PC. If there's no generic setting under Brother, then maybe try the overall Generic setting under Printer Model, or expriment until you find a setting that prints to your satisfaction, or perhaps try OTHER and point it to the right driver.

FWIW

this got broken, as far as I know, in 10.2.5 (10.2.4 worked).

Regardless, Panther should make it pretty transparent.

I know, the tutorial I used mentioned exactly what you said CHRIS HARDDRIVE, but it still doesn't work....

I tried adding the printer and used the 'standard' model (allthough I did install the appropiate drivers, it still doesn't get listed...) but now when I print it spits out EVERY fukcing page that's in the tray BLANK

Guess the good thing is that there's some communication

Guess the bad thing is printing sucks in my OSX version

for many, SMB printing was broken by 10.2.5 and 10.2.6 didn't fix it.

It might still work if you're printing using a different protocol, or if you happen to be one of the lucky few for whom it still works, but there were many for whom 10.2.5 broke SMB printing, and for those people it remains broken.

Sounds completely like a driver issue on the OSX side. Sorry.

Personally, I'd exhaust all options of trying generic settings from print center before I gave up on it.

Gotcha.

The fix seems to go back to the older SMB version before the security update that broke it.

Strange. Of the 3 Macs I own, all have been running every OSX update since before 10.2 to 10.2.6 at present, all have had all security updates, and all still use SMB printing just fine.

I've never had a problem with it. I'm just lucky that way I guess.

A guy on this page indicates that he's using a Brother HL-1240 via SAMBA using "the HP LaserJet II driver" and that it works "just fine."

I'd suggest trying either that driver, or the HP LJ III or 4 drives, as the compatibility page the same poster links to shows those as possibilties for all the Brother printers listed (not your model however).

Another avenue to try failing that, seems to be using Gimp-Print. I've never used it so I can't comment on it, but it seems to be what people resort to using once all else fails.

Still doesn't work: when I try to print the printer spits out ALL the pages out it has...blank....

What I don't understand is why the brother driver doesn't show up when I have installed it. It's supposed to be compatible with mac osx so why doesn't it work???

Is there really no way of fixing this? I really need to print directly from my TiBook...

Would this help? I definately had to use Gimp-Print. See here:
