Is there a way to copy to contents of the Panther install DVD onto an external Firewire hard drive and make it bootable, so that I can use it to install Mac OS X from or to run disk/permission checks from it?

I'm asking because the DVD installation disk takes forever to boot.

I am not entirely sure, but you should be able to install OS X on an external drive and then book from it by holding cmd + T (target disk mode).
