Hi,

Don't mind if I jump into this thread with a more specific question:

I'm using an iMac G3 500Mhz Snow (Summer 2000), which I presume has USB1.1? Will the Nano charge while connected to my iMac?

Thanks!

USB 1.1 WILL WORK, it will just be slower. The USB standard is completely backward compatible.

MUST you buy Canadian? I got my stuff from www.eforcity.com, in California, and they're quite nice. Inexpensive, too.

I think he was asking because many US manufactures don't even ship to Canada, take Canadian orders and even worse you get taxed through the ass when it comes over the border.

I ordered 2 invisible iPod Nano shields and I got hit with like $50 and that is before I get taxed (if at all).

The Apple tech notes make quite a mess of this... http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93845

The "note" says you can charge a Mini over 1.1, but must be a powered hub or direct USB port.. then it says you can charge a nano over FW (but not sync), but does not mention if the nano works over USB 1.1... seems a curious ommission.

(tho I thought Macintouch had reports of some ppl seeing odd results using the non-FW iPods on a FW report.. maybe those were just fringe results.)

YOW!!! I've ordered stuff from Canada and not had that sort of problem at all. And I didn't know that some U.S. vendors don't ship to Canada-I can't imagine why other than avoiding having to deal with Customs. Bummer.

Errr... i don't mean to flog a dead horse, but can anyone confirm if the Nano will charge on a direct USB1.1?

I went to my local Apple Retailer (Authorized Reseller) and the guys there told me it WON'T charge.

Then the Apple Doc is decidedly vague.

Cripes, all i want for Christmas is a Nano that will charge!

Thanks!

Now I'm pretty disappointed with the level of knowledge at my local Apple reseller. They assured me it wouldn't charge, and tried to sell an Apple USB Charger to me for an additional 50 bucks.

Methinks they were trying to pull a fast one on me.

Bad bad Apple Reseller....

You should note that when your computer is asleep it WILL NOT CHARGE ANYTHING. So having an AC-powered USB charger is a Good Thing. Is that what they were offering you? (And shouldn't a new iPod of any model come with its own AC charger?)

Interesting. I'd still get an AC charger if I got a Nano, just because I like having options.

Very few ipods come with the AC chargers. The mini that I have sure didn't.
AT&T iPhone 5S and 6; 13" MBP; MDD G4.

I had assumed that since our full-sized Photo iPods came with them that all iPods did. My bad-though I still like having that option.
