Miles: "Why don't they get some decent design people to make that thing look better? That thing is clunky."
I like the end when Soledad takes out her new Shuffle, clips it onto her jacket, and turns the segment into a commercial for Apple.

The 'Tech Guy' was clearly irritated by the way Miles and Soledad turned the tables on him.

Burn!
By the looks of the reviews I've seen so far...
There may not be a Zune 2.0

I dunno, it kind of looked like he started the derail. "You know, Microsoft in the end will come out with something - I don't know if it'll be that pretty, but something - isn't that neat? Oh my God."
I thought that was kind of weird, actually.

The battle is over before it's really begun.

Did she say it holds 70 songs? Cause my 512MB shuffle holds 120-140 pretty easily.

I'm pretty sure she said it was 70 dollars.

It's great. I remember when Soledad took out her PowerBook G3 one day on TV and was showing it off. This was great news however.
I love the "no comment" remark.

So if you meet another Zune user at Starbucks, you can't grab a copy of their song without asking them to send it to you first? You have to pester strangers to ask for their music?

I'm glad. I wouldn't want just anyone connecting to my zune, god knows what viruses they may infect my zune with.
Not that I'd ever buy a zune anyways.

Haha, I can't wait for the first WiFi spreading virus for the Zune. That'll be a blast

i'm surprised it doesn't have a feature that transfers a picture of you (the user) to the other person's Zune and then prompt them to allow your leeching.
of course, then people will just use a sexy woman's picture as the default profile pic, hoping people hit OK before looking around the room.

I just saw this and came here to post about it. That is the funniest thing I've seen in a LONG time. They totally bash the Zune (and rightfully so) and then turn it into an Apple commercial. Priceless.

I think he was not even convinced himself to start with. I like the very innocent sounding question early
'Can you retrieve email with the WiFi'. Nope. Bam!
Yeah that's a killer review for the Zune. Let's not underestimate Microsoft power though and also let's not underestimate the loss of the cool factor for the iPod now that everybody and his/her grandmother has one... That might be a bigger problem for Apple than the Zune.

On the Today show this morning, they had the Zune on and Al Roker and Matt Lauer talked about the songs on their iPods while Meredith Veira said she didn't mind the idea of sharing a song and having it go away after 3 days.

None of the features the Zune are all that unique.
You can already pick up a radio for the iPod... and the wireless thing could be added to the iPod without major reengineering. IMHO, Apple could probably make it cooler.

Check out the piece on the Zune on the BBC Radio NewsPod (2006/11/14). They feature 3 vox pops, all pro-Zune. On a Podcast. Oh the irony.
But according to Wiki, the Zune's big selling point is a bit of a non-feature:
Songs wirelessly transferred from one Zune to another can only be played three times. After three days, the song expires – regardless of whether or not it has been played. Just playing half the song (or one minute, whichever comes first) counts as one “play.” You can never resend a song to the same friend, nor can a song received from someone else be passed on to a third person. These limitations apply to all files, including copyright-free self-recorded songs and similar.

And according to CNN Money and Microsoft it's even more of a non-feature:
Even though I purchased music from the Zune Marketplace, and even though I was willing to abide by the DRM's restriction of allowing three plays of a shared song within three days, half the songs I tried to send wirelessly were rejected because, according to the Zune display, I lacked the rights to share those songs. Asked about this, a Microsoft spokesperson said DRM is complicated and that not all artists and labels adhere to the three days and three plays guidelines. Basically, you don't know what the rights are unless you right-click to check every song.

Dude, honestly, that's pretty cool looking. If a bit bulky. Looks like a prop from Stargate or something.

This guy needs to update his iPod or something.
My iPod displays a large letter of the alphabet when I scroll at speed through my library.
Don't they all?

I can't see why anyone would want a Zune - it seems as though the entire design of this thing is to get your money in as many ways as possible.
At least with the iPod I can add whatever I want, sans wma files (which I don't have anyway)

It's more about building the new brand and getting mindshare than getting everyone to buy one now. The version 1.0 Zune is crap, and MS probably knows this. They probably know that this version won't sell that well. They aren't bothered by that. Why? Their objective is that by the time they a version out there worth looking at, everyone will know the name Zune, what it can do, and where they can get one.

What gets me is that the launch version won't work with Vista. Of course, Vista hasn't officially launched yet, but given Microsoft's large developer and beta program, this seems to be quite a slap in the face to the people who have helped it bring that OS to a launchable state. It also leads to uncertainty over whether Microsoft will be able to get the software out the door before Vista actually launches, given that they seem to have had trouble getting it done before the Zune launched.
And when it comes right down to it, all the technology in the Zune doesn't matter one whit if you can't make it work. It's an expensive brick.

It has the same clunkyness of all the MS products, and will probably appeal to those who aren't even aware of other brands. After all, I STILL HEAR PC users not looking at iPods because they thought it only worked on an Apple machine.
