Why can you open a tree structure by pressing the right-arrow in list view in Finder, but can you only close it when you have reached the first child by pressing the left-arrow? It would be really convenient to be able to collapse the entire tree by pressing the left-arrow on any child of this tree (like in threaded view in Mail.app, Panther for instance)

Because you can't close a folder that's not open.

While I see the logic in this argument, I think people intuitively expect it will work this way.

On top of that: it's ridiculous to scroll to the parent folder to close the tree, especially when the list of folders is very large
