My friend's 11 mo MBP batter wouldn't hold a charge. He was told it went through too many cycles. Seems a bit soon to die to me. Shouldn't a batter last a full year even if charged several times a day?

Either way, at 11 months it is still under warranty. Battery life is linked to cycles, but no matter what the Apple warranty is 1 year. Make sure your friend gets the battery exchanged before the year is up.

Battery Lifespan
A properly maintained Apple notebook battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 300 full charge and discharge cycles. You may choose to replace your battery when it no longer holds sufficient charge to meet your needs.

It's about charge cycles, not time.
