Playboy Goes PG And The Village Voice Changes Hands, Again | Deadline
I've had a subscription for almost my entire adult life, going on 25 years (since I was 21), but I won't be re-subscribing after this goes into effect. Frankly, it's become so PC of late that even the articles are worthless, and this is the last straw. Oh well. So long Playboy, and thanks for all the flesh.

Odd, I can't imagine the tits were the reason to still be subscribed to Playboy.

They didn't hurt. Fundamentally, it's just the final nail in the coffin.

It's the nail in the coffin as far a pornographic aficionados or legacy subscribers. If the person liked their written content, I'm not sure this changes all that much. The question is whether they can pick up new blood with the move. Or if it'll outweigh the losses. Given the print market, unlikely.

The war on nudity has been brutal, and it's a crying shame. The sexual revolution is dead and the puritans are taking over, welcome to the new Victorian era.

It has more to do with all the free porn on the net. I don't know how the pay channels survive with all the free video and pic websites. Hilton dropped the porn channels from their hotels, but still allows people to access porn sites on wifi.

That doesn't address the PC route the company has taken in its content (boobies aside). Specifically, their adoption of overt identity politics and neo-progressivism over the last 10 years has been very obvious, and a true shame to witness.

Commercial interests under pressure to grow are naturally rendering themselves as inoffensive as possible to absolutely everyone. Hollywood did it which is why we don't get 18 or R rated action flicks very often because you make more cash per household if they can take the kids. And because the kids are more likely to drag parents to see stuff.
Not sure how Playboy plans to differentiate itself from an already full market of Maxim, FHM and various other advert catalogues with occasional lingerie shots and articles about cigars and posh watches.

That's what's so funny about this, they go from being a publisher of gentleman's magazines (the USA has few of those that aren't simply straight-up porn) and adult content, to becoming just another Maxim/FHM/Cosmo advertising platform. I stopped looking at playboy sometime in the 80s when I became a master of panty removal.
Seriously tho, IMO the magazine lost its edge sometime in the late 70s, but was at its peak maybe late 60s-77 or so when the sexual revolution was in full swing. All I know is that the very year I joined the Playboy Club (in NYC) it closed, so whatever.

Probably younger than you... Nearly every male adult I knew had playboy laying around openly, every barber shop, etc, plus I was hanging out in bars at 15 with the 'grownups' in nyc. But even at a much younger age I had access to playboy.

Where were you when the feminists were crying over; boobies on Game of Thrones? UK Lads' mags? Pornography in general? Don't you know? Nudity is exploitation, or some crap like that.
Well, if the other guys have better circulation, who can blame them...
If they did that would make sense, but as stated earlier, the market they're moving into is more saturated than the one they're leaving.

Is a saturated market worse than a dying market? It's sort of like moving from NC-17 to R. That R rating will get you in a lot more places.

Speaking from the the "puritanical," try-to-avoid-nudity-besides-my-wife side of things, nudity is not on the downswing. If anything, it's more pervasive than ever. The problem for Playboy is as simple as Hugh and the guy who had the idea have clearly stated: they can't compete with Internet pornography.
I think what you're actually upset about is that the glory days when nudity was considered mostly off-limits and dangerous have been over for about 15 years.
These days, you can have immediate access to nudity and sex of any variety, so Playboy was already considered archaic. Their subscription numbers for the magazine plummeted, but their web traffic increased exponentially when they removed nudity from their site.

Source.
The company cleaned up its Web site last year and saw traffic quadruple and the median age of its readers move from 47 years of age to 30, “an attractive demographic for advertisers,” its statement noted.
Mostly pure speculation here, but it could be that over-exposed, younger readers are far less impressed with nudity, and instead gravitate towards cause-based content.

After reading Jawbone's comment - I kind of agree - nudity is everywhere, we've become desensitized. Back in the day you had to work at getting a glimpse of a booby.

I don't see any merit in giving thought to people who ignore that Jaime gets raped as well, or that the depiction of sexism and violence if historically accurate to the time period Martin used for inspiration.

Also ignoring that what happened to Theon is worse than anything that's happened to any female character on the show. It's a depiction of medieval life, which by all accounts was brutal all-around.

After Marriott pulled their adult movies in 2011, Alec Helmy, owner of adult-industry magazine Xbiz, said it showed how the on-demand industry had 'tanked' in recent years.
He estimated that demand for adult pay-per-view films had dropped by 50 per cent in the years leading up to 2011, adding that such services are 'just not profitable anymore'.
Two years after Marriott dropped on-demand pornography in its hotels, LodgeNet, the company which provided them with pay-per-view content, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
According to reports filed at the time, LodgeNet had seen profits fall from an all-time high of $533.9million in 2088, to $421.3million in 2011.
That fall represented a 21 per cent drop in profits just at the time on-demand services such as Hulu and Netflix were gaining huge popularity, and occurred even before Marriott dropped on-demand adult films.

They are very much trading on their old brand and Heff's lifestyle than they are on printing pics of naked ladies. It makes absolute sense that their logo is more profitable than the mag.
I always thought the magazines USP was in its ability to persuade A and B list female celebrities to pose naked when other publications could not. Maybe that doesn't generate anyone the circulation and PR they desire any more. Maybe its because most of them are all but naked in FHM et al or more than naked when they leak their sex tapes or get their iClouds hacked.
I'm sure a centrefold of Jennifer Lawrence or Emma Stone would sell a few copies but I can't see there would be much in it for them. I almost think that the brand used to be so strong that even a lot of women secretly liked the idea of being in it. Now they just get their own instagram or whatever I guess.

The last time I bought a Playboy was the one with Carnie Wilson, so both only for a celebrity, and more than 10 years ago.

Why does "cheesecake" bother you? The woman made more for that shoot than most people make in a week (if not more).

That'll likely slow down considerably when their brand is no longer associated with pretty nudes.

It doesn't bother me in and of itself, but this was an example of a pretty common thing I'm bothered by, which is the cheesecake being thrown into inappropriate contexts, like a gadget magazine.

You are very much out of touch. As self-evidenced by the fact that you still have a Playboy subscription.
There's nothing wrong with that. But there's no need to go rampaging about to blame larger societal ills just because your classy titty mag of choice is going, errrr, tits up.
