Hello,

Here at work I've got a Yikes-era G4 that I want to connect up to a nice older Apple monitor, the kind with the larger (i.e. not VGA style) connector. I am sure that these machines shipped with a VGA female to Apple style monitor male adapter, but there are none around here that I can find. Does anyone know where I can find a supply of these things, popularly called 'dongles' as I recall? The Apple Store no longer sells them...

tia!

Ben

p.s. I do not need a VGA male to Apple female -- I've got several of those, which allowed you to use a cheaper VGA monitor on earlier generation Power Macs. No, I need VGA female to Apple male.

Here's the first item on a Google search for "Mac VGA Adapter":

<a href="http://shopper.cnet.com/shopping/resellers/0-11170-311-365724.html" target="_blank">http://shopper.cnet.com/shopping/resellers/0-11170-311-365724.html</a>

To avoid confusion, you should refer to the old-style mac port as a "DB15", and the standard VGA port as "HDDB15". A google search of "HDDB15F DB15M" gives you lots of options.

You may also be able to find a cable with vga on the one end and old-style mac at the other. Some video projectors ship with this cable - they have both ports on the projector, so all you have to do is turn the cable around to hook up a mac or pc.

If you really have trouble getting one of these things, you can also buy the more common HDDB15M-DB15F and then "reverse" it with a M-F extension
cable on each end.

Good luck!

Thanks to Xyphoid Process,

Now that I know to call a regular VGA plug a HDDB15 and the Apple one a DB15 (well, that one I knew), the search was much easier.

But, in case someone comes across this thread in the archives: please note that the URL Xyphoid provided is for a HDDB15F/DB15M adaptor. That is, the adaptor has a female VGA port and a male Apple port. This is NOT what you want is you want to connect a G4 to a Apple monitor. You want a HDD15M/DB15F adaptor. That has a male VGA and female Apple port. The male VGA connects to the female VGA port in the G4, the female Apple side receives the Apple monitor's DB15 cable.

The URL you want is:
<a href="http://www.mysimon.com/isrch/index.jhtml?c=networking&pgid=shop&InputKeyword=HD DB15M%2FDB15F&v=1&pg=1&key=UC_20020716_082516_0158 951370" target="_blank"> <a href="http://www.mysimon.com/isrch/index.jhtml?c=networking&pgid=shop&InputKeyword=HD DB15M%2FDB15F&v=1&pg=1&key=UC_20020716_082516_0158 951370" target="_blank">http://www.mysimon.com/isrch/index.jhtml?c=networking&pgid=shop&InputKeyword=HD DB15M%2FDB15F&v=1&pg=1&key=UC_20020716_082516_0158 951370</a> </a>

have fun,

Ben

Glad to hear it worked out for you.

To clarify, your post said you "need VGA female to Apple male", which is the link I gave. In actual fact, the required gender depends on where you want to put in on the chain - right on the monitor's port, right on the computer or in the middle of two cables, whether the cables employed are standard m-m or m-f extensions etc... When you look for an adapter, define the connectors' genders by what is on the adapter itself and not its intended targets.

In any event, I sympathise with you - it can be very confusing once all the acronyms start flying around.

This is what I used to connect an Apple Multiple Scan 720 monitor to my yikes G4. It worked flawlessly.
