John Rogers (Catwoman) is writing Transformers, a DreamWorks/Paramount live-action SF movie based on the popular Hasbro toys, Variety reported. Steven Spielberg is executive producing the movie, which is slated for a summer 2006 release and is being eyed as the start of a franchise, the trade paper reported.

Angry Films chief Don Murphy and Tom DeSanto, who executive produced the two X-Men films, are producing the movie, along with Lorenzo Di Bonaventura. DeSanto wrote the story that Rogers will adapt, the trade paper reported.

Transformers, which were popular in the 1980s, are giant robots that morph into cars, trucks and planes.

That photo is so funny. I for one, would vote Optimus Prime. I mean, he is a proven leader.

In the words of Metallica, Sad but True. Prime did however pass on the Matrix of leadership to Ultra Magnus who whooped up on Galvatron and restored peace to the universe.

Great! Now I want to leave work and go home and watch that dvd

Actually, if I remember correctly, Ultra Magnus got killed too; leadership then passed to Hot Rod, who then became Rodimus Prime, and he was the one who beat Galvatron.

Transformers: The Movie was the isht! As a wee child, I shed a tear when Optimus died too. That marked the end of an era for me. Never bought another one.

Actually, while Optimus did give the Matrix to Ultra Magnus, it didn't work because it wasn't meant for him. It was neant for Hot Rod, IIRC.

Nope, Ultra Magnus did not die. Oh and this movie is going to be really cool.

Optimus Prime dying was for us male geeks, as the death of Bambi was to kids of that generation.

Optimus Prime was the first transformer toy I ever bought. I remember how cool it was.

My wife bought some transformers for my 4-year old son the other day -- man, the quality of these toys has really gone down the tubes. The things fall apart at every opportunity. When I was a kid these things were mostly metal and very durable. I still have the white autobot airplane transformer from my childhood (my son plays with it). It's mostly metal and completely kidproof.

I traded in a bunch of old transformer toys a few years back, got like 30 bucks for an old Optimus Prime (not the really awesome one, the one where you can use his trailer to make him this huge gygundo robot)... I miss my toys. But yah the Transformer toys that came out, essentially ever since my grade five year have been getting more and more crappy. I'm just glad the Beast Wars toys died, dang that was a sad toy franchise, half decent show but they screwed with so many constancy aspects of the show it's not even funny. Now the new shows just plain suck. They seriously need to get back to the basic story line it was sooo much better than the new crap they're throwing in which kinda catches up on the series but not at all.

Ah yes; Powermaster Optimus Prime. I think I've still got mine, minus some of the guns and stuff. I'll have to dig it out.

Who's your favorite non-leader Transformer? Mine's Blur, with Beachcomber a close 2nd.

Now I wish my old Transformers were at my house instead of my parents' attic.

Yah I got all the parts over the course of about ten garage sales. Haha, I had three trailers two semis, the last part I got was the big head.

But yah it was awesome. My fave shoot what was the Big Space Shuttle Dragon thing? I really liked Grimlock and the rest of the Dino Bots, I loved Blaster (had the big real size radio one). I also liked Sound Wave. I always liked RC and... shoot what was the name of the green Helicopter? Iron Hide was cool just cause he was mouthy... I always hated Star Scream.

Jetfire and Springer (the green helicopter).

I think Prowl and Jazz were the first ones I owned.

I believe the green Helicopter/Car/Robot (triple changer) was Springer.

Starscream. He may have been a whiny little biatch, but how can you beat a guy who transforms into an f-15. The other fighter jet transforming decepticon had no personality.

I always kind dug (hehe) the Constructicons/Devastator. They were kinda no-nonsense and had the tools to get the job done.

Odd-But-True-Transformers-Trivia: Remember the Mark Wahlberg film Boogie Nights? There was a scene where Wahlberg's character was trying to break into the music business, and he a fellow porn star recorded a song. For whatever reason, that song was 'The Touch,' which was the theme from the 1984 Transformers movie.

I was just going to comment that they should use a few songs from the Transformers soundtrack on the new movie. I kinda liked a few of them. (Such as "The Touch")

Actually, Ultra Magnus *kind of* died - he got shot to bits by Galvatron on the planet of junk, and then Wreck Gar put him back together after Hot Rod invoked the universal greeting. Optimus Prime did die in that movie (the only leading character in a cartoon movie to ever die, or at least the first, to the best of my knowledge), but he was resurected at the end of G2 by the Quintisons in a trap to detroy all transformers, leading to a madness plague that was turned back by Optimus reclaiming the matrix from an infect Rodimus Prime.

Yes, I own the entire series on DVD, as well as the movie

I had an idea for a transformers movie once. It would be centered around a military project to develop AI - they needed a working product and someone in the project had created it. For some unknow catalyst, that person vanishes and leaves the project high and dry. So as not to look dumb, the miilitary goes forward with human operated robots but tells the public they have AI. So the transformers are born, but are kind of like the "Big Guy" cartoon. At some point, other transformers pop up - when one is captured and disected, they don't find any humans on the inside or an outside signal controling it - it has the missing person's AI programming!

Yeah smething like that.

Hey, has anybody seen the re-release of several of the old original Transformers? I remember seeing a big, die-cast version of the original Optimus Prime at Wal Mart or someplace a little while back. I found this link, check it out!
