Yes and no and yes and no. In iPhoto the HomePage button has been replaced with a simple iWeb button. iWeb automatically asks you to pick a template, recieves the photos, and places them in the photo slots. You can then edit the text and press Publish. The whole process is automated. Here's a button picture:

On mac .com however there's still a way to use HomePage, and you don't even need iLife '06 (or any iLife for that matter.) Simply use a Windows/OS9/OSX or other WebDAV compatible OS to upload your photos to the pictures folder, then use the .Mac interface to publish them.

It's still the same as ever.

I posted my iWeb musings to http://web.mac.com/ryaxnb2/iWeb/Site/Welcome.html. If you look at some of the source code:
[HTML]><img id="shapeimage_2" src="Welcome_files/shapeimage_2.png" style="border: none; height: 573px; left: 0px; position: absolute; top: 0px; width: 490px; z-index: 1; " longdesc="I think iWeb is a very interesting product. iWeb is a basic website creator in the style of Pages. I almost think Pages should be merged into iWeb. I wonder how to export into Pages and vice versa? I think that should be a feature of the next release. iWeb does seem a little constrained to fit with only Apple programs. I noticed that dragging media files from the Finder or anywhere but the media browser to the “photo hot spots” (my term) didn’t really work. Instead, the photo was added to the document as a separate layer. In any case, iWeb will be great for the casual website maker. I’m sure iWeb has some flaws with browser compatibility (overuse of px, mindless CSS use, no print stylesheet, no fallback font suggestions, NC4 total breakdown and such) but overall it looks good. A couple questions about iWeb answered: What does it look like? See iWeb screenshots. Can it publish to FTP, SFTP, other WebDAV, etc.? Sort-of. You’ll need your own publishing utility, as iWeb can only publish to .mac or to a folder. Can it publish to CD or other publishing medium? Yes, using publish to folder. iWeb looks very cool. Does iWeb work with my preexisting website? Barely. iWeb does not support relative URLs, has a “unmodifiable” (you can remove but not add items) navigation menu, and some other things to make using iWeb as a supplementary tool fairly impractical. Does iWeb actually turn all your text into a graphic with a longdesc tag? Yes!! WTF? Weird, huh? Only sometimes does it do that." alt="I think iWeb..." name="shapeimage_2" usemap="#map1" /><map name="map1" id="map1"><area href="http://homepage.mac.com/ryaxnb2/screenshots.html" title="http://homepage.mac.com/ryaxnb2/screenshots.html" shape="rect" alt="http://homepage.mac.com/ryaxnb2/screenshots.html" onload="IMpreload('Welcome_files', 'shapeimage_2', '0');" onmouseover="IMmouseover('shapeimage_2', '0');" onmouseout="IMmouseout('shapeimage_2');" coords="34, 207, 140, 225" /></map></div>[/HTML] You can see it's actually publishing my text as images with longdesc tags.

Initial impressions of iPhoto 6 are pretty good. On my slowly aging PB12/1ghz/768, I'm getting noticably improved response from the application (about 10,000 photos, 12GB) compared to my G5/1.6.

The good points:
- scrollling is smoother and thumbnails, while momentarily blurring, sharpen up quite quickly.
- open and close times are fast considering how big the library is
- some of the new features are really nice; they've definitely taken a page from Aperture with the side-by-side, full screen editing. one click effects make edits quite quick and maybe it's just me but the Enhance button (which I rarely used before) seems to be more accurate in making the photos more color/exposure accurate
- calendar and postcards are going to make nice gifts; I'm already putting together a 2006 calendar for my mother in law using pics of her grandson

The bad points/bugs:

- Reveal Original in Finder appears in contextual menu when browsing thumbnails but is permanently greyed out; I thought that this menu was in iPhoto 5 but after checking, apparently not
- dates (for me) are screwed up on the photos; not sure if it's just a display bug, but ALL my photos are grouped by roll (in iPhoto and correspondingly in Finder folders as well) and photos are not showing real date. While the date of a photo might be 12/31/05, the roll date shows up as 12/05/05 and the photo date (in iPhoto, Get Info) shows up as 12/2005/2005. I'm going to reconvert my iPhoto 5 library to see if I get the same results
- the new folder hierarchy bugs me; Finder sorts the pictures by iPhoto/Original/Year/Roll_Name instead of the original iPhoto/Year/Month/Day/Original (Thumbnails) which was an easier to navigate structure if you had to simply locate photos in the Finder

Will add whatever else I find later...

It turns out that this feature is only enabled for those images that are not copied into the iPhoto library. Which is really stupid IMO. IIRC iPhoto 5 had this feature ... but perhaps not. All I know is that it is silly to have it disabled simply because the original is in the iPhoto library.

Thanks for figuring that one out. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense because that feature IS enabled in iTunes.

Hopefully 6.0.1 whenever it comes out will fix that.

Can anyone tell me if iMovie now has QT style controls when you are viewing things in full screen mode (so you don't have to stop and minimise the playback just to e.g. fast forward a bit)?

TIA

Could someone kindly explain why this feature is useful? I'm drawing a blank.

I currently live in Japan and would like to upgrade to iLife '06. I found the software at local store and asked the salespeople if there were options for English. They told me it was only Japanese - though I have a feeling something was lost in translation. So my question: Should I be buying this 'Japanese' version of iLife '06 and is there an option for English upon installation? Thanks in advance.
