Can I use 7" and 10" in it? Or is it fussy like slot loading iMacs?

It was only recently re-named 'electronica' by corporate America when it needed to put it in a convenient package and sell it. Despite the fact that beautifull, vibrant electronic music was being made in America 25 years earlier. You may not have been paying attention then, but the rest of the world was. 'Electronica' is a term used by lazy journalists. Not that it really matters, and I'm sorry about bitching, but its true.

And niether myself, nor phanguye were alive 25 years ago, so what was happening back then really makes no difference to us(or atleast me for sure) now. all i know is that this music that we love is made mostly with electronics, hence electronica

Ooooooo...what a nice segue to a topic I was once considering to post. I'm a member of eMusic and was surveying the site's Electronica listings (hey, that's what they call it) and am completely overwhelmed by the various classifications.
  • Dance
  • Techno
  • Ambient
  • House
  • Down-Tempo
  • Trip-Hop
  • Turntabilism
  • Breaks
  • Abstract
  • IDM
  • Drums 'n' Bass
  • Trance
  • Industrial
  • Experimental
  • Bass
  • Remix
  • Dub
  • Jungle

And at being a positively ancient 35 years of age, I was hoping to get some insight in what these definitions denote. I'm planning on downloading a bit of each (lately I've been digging the ESL label--downtempo) to sample (not sampling), but if anyone could provide a brief overview of that genre, I'd appreciate it.

Side-note: I received a minor in linguistics and there's a doctoral thesis in these names alone: "turntabilism"--brilliant word coinage.

Absolutly, and I doubt anyone does care what "that giant piece of shi+ does". Musically, its pretty dire stuff. Well, the watered down, sanitised version that was repackaged and re-named in an attempt to sell back to us certainly is. Thanks for that. Luckily we're not falling for such cheap tricks. Well, not all of us.

As I already said, I don't mean to complain, but people (the world over) have a history of ignoring or more acurately - shunning original, exciting stuff only to champion a watered down version a few years down the line.

I doubt the people who create are so quick to attach labels.

'Electronica' is an awfull, bullsh!t term for something that didn't need to be re-named. Thanks again, but no thanks.

just for clarification mr.benn cause i can only speak for what happens here... but in the uk do they refer to everything as techno??? and do you refer to everything as techno???

i am just curious... i have always thought that electonica was a better word just cause it seemed to encompass all the diffenent types of electronic music better... it some how just does not seem right to call trance or house or anything else techno...

but that is just how we do things on this side of the pond and like kaner said i am only 20 and have limited knowledge of anything before new order and that era...

well anyway i would really like to know if you call everything techno

thanks

Check out the guide to electronica music.

Although it's not all really correct, it gives a good basis of what is what

Techno is refered to as techno. There never really was term to umbrella all music made with computers, synths etc.. Theres always been quite specific genres, house, techno, etc. but it all overlaps... Are there any guitar bands who don't use Pro Tools?

We all know Reason is the music making software, but has anyone heard of Traktor, the music mixing software? A lot of notebook DJ's are using this now, and it's quite awesome. I know a few DJ's who experiment with it, and I've used it myself. It's awesome for recording your own personal sets.

Steve, thanks for the link--complete with raverporn ads too!! --must wait till I get home from work.

From searchng Google, IDM (Intelligent Dance Music)

"...means the opposite of stupid hardcore. And of commercial dance music. Ambient music and intelligent techno were always linked in my mind and the audience largely overlaps. Intelligent techno has got to have more function than just to be utilitarian dance music. It has to give you something to listen to and be intrigued by. It has to work in the domestic environment."

That's OK--look's like rotating flash ads-- The tagline's pretty funny: "More naked ravers than you can shake a glow stick at!"

Found an interesting article on turntablism--FYI y'all, I own an original "Rapper's Delight 12 inch." Got it when I was 13. Pbbbbbbbbbbb!

Just lump all that lot together, its more fun that way. Recomendations - Boards of Canada, Recloose, Royksopp, ummm... innerzone orchestra. and bazillions more. Find someting you like and get led down a musical path to more music. Electronic music is the new folk music
