Any FTP app i try fails to connect, as soon as i disable the firewall in the system prefs it works. What gives? I like having my firewall on...how can i resolve this?

You can selectively open the ports that FTP uses. That's ports 20 and 21. Go to the firewall preferences; the option to open specific ports should be there.

Note that your ISP may NOT allow incoming Port 21 traffic, but you should be able to connect to external FTP servers without any problem.

And this really should have been in Networking.

It might work with Passive FTP mode. You can activate it in Network Preferences in the Proxy tab or in the app itself.
