2 Part question here:

1) So my mom wants a small tv for her room. She already has a portable DVD player with a screen size she likes. It has an a/v and audio in port. She has comcast cable. Would you suggest finding the right adapter/converter to hook the two up (I'm no expert on wires and the like), or just get her a new tv?

2) What are you guys doing as christmas gifts for girl friends this christmas? I've already gotten mine a terabyte hardrive (she's an engineer - she'll appreciate), but I'm just trying to think of some other ideas. Just curious.

First off, why is this in the political lounge?

And to answer your quesitons:

What size is the display on the portable DVD player? An 8" works when it's a foot in front of you, but it's not so good when it's down at the end of the bed on a dresser or table. I'd recommend getting a small TV with a built in DVD player - or, if you want to spend a little more, get a 17" computer LCD and hook up a media center PC to it (that's what I did, and I love it).

I only bought a couple friends gifts this year. I got my best friend a remote for his xbox 360, since he uses the Windows Media Center features on it it pretty frequently. I got another friend an electric Norelco razor, because he's broke and mentioned he needed a new one.
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

1) If money isn't too much of an issue, I say get a new TV. A 17" or anything the 20s" shouldn't be too bad.

2) We're doing small things (under $20) and taking a trip. No decision on where we're headed yet. For the small item I'll probably get her a book.

I would also agree, kill two birds with one stone. An easy interface/all in one device, will cut down on your 24/7 tech support =].

As for the girlfriend, that's a tough one. If I were to get mine a TB HD, she'd look at me like I was crazy. I'm getting my girlfriend some clothes and a couple TV shows on DVD. Maybe some cute love coupons or something. I'm such a girl sometimes

What is the big issue with some of you guys about where a thread is.

For my mom I bought her a door stopper so the smoke from my dad's room won't go through and some pot-pourri.

For my dad a book on Frontenac

For my sister tickets to see Diana Krall.

I'll jump to #2, the gf gift.

I just ordered one of those fancy makeup mirrors with the light around it.
We recently stayed at a nice hotel where they had a makeup station (or whatever you call it) with a brass mirror that had 8x and a light for exposing horrid feminine secrets.

Maybe I'll also get a gift card from Victoria's Secret, and some stocking stuffers.
