Not a bad price since it has applecare. I wonder if you will get the intel stuff as well or whether apple is really trying to dump old stock.

I saw these at Costco yesterday. Definately G5's. Not an intel in sight.

Seems like costco got a deal buying a bunch of old iMacs and is selling the out. I would, however, confirm the MFR's warranty of 3 years and that AppleCare is truly included. If so, it's not a bad price.

Not a great price, but not bad. Amazon with rebate is less (without AppleCare).

If that is the case, not a bad deal at all. Lower than the education discount.
Yes, I know I could buy a PC, but why?

Yes, they do - someone at this office I'm at today was talking about returning
a Toshiba laptop two years after purchase and actually got a new replacement.
I was flabbergasted. The same person talked about a friend of hers who bought
a series of high-speed go-carts for a recreational business from them and when
his business tanked he was able to return the carts even though they had been
used. That amazes me.

That is a great price considering you have 3 year warranty. I wonder how much disk space it had.

Yeah. I saw them this afternoon. It's the top of the line G5 iMac. 3 year Applecare included. I'd seriously consider it if I didn't already have my intel iMac.

Thanks for the heads up on this deal, I'm seriously considering this, especially with Applecare included. The return policy is really nice as well, no problems it seems if there's a couple of dead pixels on the screen.

From the Costco FAQ:
How do I return an item?
Costco.com offers convenient returns at any one of our Costco warehouses worldwide. To expedite the return process, please have your order confirmation email with you.

If you are unable to return your order at one of our warehouses, please email [email protected] to arrange for a pickup.

Please note that the return policy for all notebook and desktop computers is 6 months, from the date of purchase. After that time, all services and technical support will be subject to the applicable remaining manufacturers' warranty.

Yes, and weasel-ish tactics like that (when used just to "work the system") hurt me and every other Costco member.

What to do, what to do. I went to Coscco today to look at the imacs and they are indeed there. The price seems pretty good, too, esp. with AppleCare thrown in. I had decided to buy a new mac sometime this year -- but not I'm facing the dilemma of which one -- intel or existing architecture. An imac would fit my needs, and though I wasn't planning on getting one quite yet, if I want an existing imac, I probably need to move relatively quickly. I'm not sure if I should should just make the jump to intel now (I tend to hold onto my machines quite a while; I'm replacing a G4 400 mz tower purchased in 2000 -- with an upgraded processor, so it is faster than when i got it), so maybe I should go new. On the other hand, I won't have to worry about upgrading software if I stick with the existing, nor will I need to deal with first-generaiotn problems. Of course, I could wait 6 months, then it would probably be on an upgraded path. Maybe. Or maybe not.
Any opinions?

if youre gonna hold on to the machine for that long...get the intel imac. amazon has a $125 rebate on the 17" imac CD and $150 on the 20" imac CD, with no tax and no shipping fees, this seems like the best deal to me

Keep in mind that the Intel iMacs are exactly a rev. A machine. They just have a different processor. It's really no different than getting a new chip in a G5. Get the Intel if you hold on to your machines for as long as you say you do.

Be nice if Costco started carrying all Macs. Having the 6 month policy is nice, if something happens to it during that time. Forget waiting on Apple to fix, just go get another one.

I do hate that Costco only accepts American Express.

That's kind of what I was thinking. I don't turn them over quickly (it would be nice if I could, though!), so given that, I was changing my thinking toward waiting a while more and then going with the Intel.

Thanks for the thoughts.

No problem, but I hope you read my post as saying "keep in mind that the Intel iMacs aren't exactly rev. A machines". I forgot the "n't". :o Glad you decided to go Intel.

Which store? Intel iMacs at Costco would be Big News among Macophiles and I haven't heard a peep about it...

The person on the other forum recanted his claim after returning to Costco and realizing that the "Intel" iMacs were actually G5s.

Nick, I think you may have overlooked the "Intel" designation in the previous post.

My local Costco only has the G5 iMacs. I hope this isn't just a "clearance" arrangement with Apple and that we'll see Intel models at some point.

They have them at Costco Livonia II, Michigan.

Costco sold iMacs back in 1999. It was short lived. They also sell iPods.

I'm sure that's what it is. Apple cleared out all remaining G5's from Apple Stores and shipped them to CostCo. Apple is in the Intel business now, and is pushing hard to get G5s out of the primary inventory.

That said -- I just bought one of the G5 iMacs from CostCo after a bad experience with the new Intel Mini. I'll wait for the Intel transition to smooth over... and if things look good in 5 months and 29 days time, I'll return the Mac to Costco......

its obvious that this is an attempt for apple to get rid of G5's. there is no way in hell that apple is gonna stock the walls of costco, i know i would be returning my computers every 7 months or so if they did.

Yes, and as a Costco member, allow me to thank you for adopting such a lamer strategy.

It's crap like that that makes retailers seriously scale back their return policies. I hope you're satisfied when Costco does the same.

I'd only be a weasel if I returned the iMac but kept the Apple Care registration materials... or kept the install disks, etc etc. Taking CostCo up on an offer is not dishonest... it's within the scope of their own policy!

Are you still trying to rationalize this with yourself? Costco isn't making you an "offer" of a free computer upgrade every 6 months. They are offering you satisfaction in the product you are purchasing. And returning a computer in 6 months just to get the new model has nothing to do with satisfaction in the computer you previously purchased. You're not "reaping" the benefits of the Costco return policy, you're "raping" the benefits.

I once had the misfortune of working (briefly) in retail. I say misfortune because I had to work with customers who share your mentality.

If you don't think your approach is dishonest, well, you operate on a different moral plane than I do. And frankly, many of us (i.e. "society") tire of paying the costs associated with customers like you.

It's not dishonest at all.

A "rape" is forcing one's will on another. I won't be forcing anything. CostCo would take my mac back with a big smile, should I decide to return it.
