I purchased a USB 2 PCI card made by Startech for my GigE PowerMac G4. The card claims compatibility with all PowerMacs after the B&W G3. However, it turned out that the card is a half-length card, while the G4 has full-length PCI slots. It didn't seem like the card would fit (here's a pic):

Am I missing something obvious? Can you use a half-length card in a full-length slot?

Yes. It'll work.

Isn't that like asking if a half-gallon of water will fit a one gallon container?

First time this situation came up in my machine I was a little caught off guard as well. If you are unfamilier with the guts of you mac I can see where the confusion would...
Rest assured, it will work.

I'm not unfamiliar with the guts of my Mac...this is a custom-built Mac after all. It's just that the notches on the card do not line up as I expected them to, so I thought I'd better check before damaging the card.

The notches in the PCI slot better line up! Otherwise, you have a problem.
The card may be shorter than the full slot, but shot cards don't need to be held in the back.

Yeah, it turned out to be okay after all. I had to really push the card back against the faceplate to make it line up, but it worked.
