Spotted on xlr8yourmac.com:

"Seagate announces new hard drives (up to 500GB desktop, 100GB/7200rpm notebook) - PCworld has an article on Seagate showing new drives that mentions DB35 (IDE/SATA) series desktop 7200rpm models up to 400GB, new Cheetah SCSI drives up to 300GB and a Fiber channel 7200rpm drive with up to 500GB capacity. A SATA version of the 500GB drive to be released in 2005 they say.
The article also mentions notebook drives up to 100GB (5400rpm and 7200rpm models) - all said to ship later this year. A quick scan of Seagate's website news listings didn't find any PR on these drives yet however.
(Hitachi also has a 400GB IDE/SATA drive and Toshiba previously announced a 100GB 2.5" (notebook) hard drive, but it was a 4200rpm model.)"

"For the notebook PC sector, the company announced the Momentus 5400.2 and Momentus 7200.1 products. The former are 5400 rpm ATA drives intended for use in mainstream notebooks and the latter are 7200 rpm ATA and Serial ATA drives aimed at workstation-class machines. Both are available in 60GB, 80GB, and 100GB capacities. The slower drives will be available in the third quarter and the faster drives in the fourth quarter."

100 MB 5400 rpm drives by Aug?, 7200 rpm drives for Christmas.

With Toshiba announcing 60GB drives for the iPOD and still no 7200 rpm 80GB 2.5" drives, I've been waiting for another HD vendor to pick up the obvious need for faster, big notebook drives.

I hope the new drives are not too power hungry!

Nice to see that Seagate's trying to become competitive in the mobile storage business as it's been dominated by Hitachi/IBM and Toshiba for quite some time.

I had stuck with IBM's DeskStar (DeathStar) series for years before they started to have severe QC problems, at which point they just sold it off to Hitachi. The TravelStar drives are still quite good, but I'd like to see what Seagate can offer--for desktop drives, Seagate's are the way to go.

As I drive around, I'm starting to see billboards for Samsung hard drives. Anyone have any positive or negative experiences with them?

They even shipped some boxes -- but with only 5400 rpm drives inside -- to Best Buy!

I really like my 60 GB 7200 HD, it's a real shame the 100GB versions have taken so long to ship.

BTO only. They'll never offer by default unless it's very low power. The next top of the range Powerbook will most likely have a default 80GB 5400RPM drive which is excellent for most. It would be a crime not to have an ATI 9800 Mobility to keep up with CPU and HD advances. I'm still waiting for my dream config to run Tiger and Final Cut HD.

2Ghz G4 or G5.
9800 Mobility 256MB
100GB 7200RPM HD
1GB memory
1920x1200 res. 17" screen.

All default spec with no BTO! That would teach Dell and Sony a lesson. The best OS and up to date hardware.

The last time I checked, Apple did not offer any 7200 rpm HDs, BTO or otherwise.

I really do not understand the power issue -- my battery actually lasts LONGER after swapping the Apple stock 4200 rpm 60 GB drive for this 60 GB 7200 rpm HD.

Apple has always cut corners on hard drives and RAM. No way they will offer ANY PB with 1 GB standard.

And as for me, I am very pleasantly surprised at how helpful going from 1 GB to 2GB for RAM in this PB 17, if you are dreaming, add an extra gig...

I'm so tempted to buy the 100GB drive when it is released, but I have to keep my self control and wait incase the drive has problems, but boy I really don't wanna wait. I could finally have all my iPod playlists on my PB without worrying about storage.

Just installed the 5400 RPM Seagate Momentus 100 Gb drive in my PB 12 Aluminum. The 7200 RPM shouldn't be any harder once it gets released. First, I put the drive into an external 2.5 inch drive case and used Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer all the data from my old 80 Gb 4200 RPM Toshiba drive onto the new one.

The actual physical install took about an hour. It's an easier job than putting a drive in an iBook, but definitely tougher than a Titanium. Followed the guide at http://macs.about.com/gi/dynamic/off...%2F53.0.0.html
Be patient and keep track of all the screws. For the screws on the top, I used my old trick for working inside iBooks. I Scotch tape each screw next to the hole from which it was removed. Makes it trivial to keep track of little screws and where they go even when there are dozens.

Nice to have space again.

How's the noise and heat level compared to your stock HD? I'm really anxious to get one too, but haven't found any canadian retailer carrying it yet.

I haven't notice any difference in heat or noise level, but remember this is the 5200 RPM version not the 7200.

Update: The Seagate Momentus 7200.1 release looks to be around April 2005 now. No price indicated yet.

a g5 would be nice with the 9800 at 8x. sata 2 would also help speed things up. Oh yea and now that bt 2.0 is out and 802.11n it will all fit right in.
