With "pod" on lockdown, Apple goes after "podcast" - Engadget

You would think Apple would be absolutely ecstatic to have 'podcast' be synonymous with online broadcasting...but no, of course not.

Is Apple really trying to run itself into the ground with negative public opinion? When will it stop?

It looks like an attempt to push people towards using iPods for podcasts.

Apple's obsession with its vertical-integration business model works well in some cases, but as we all know, they can get too greedy with this, and it almost killed them once.

I think to a lot of people, the Apple "un-initiates" shall we say, this will be their first time seeing how petty Apple Legal can be.

Very stupid. That usage does not harm the iPod in any way. Does Apple even own a mark to the term?

No, but it is hurting Apple's chances of trademarking "iPodcast," which is what they're trying to do.

Well, they should have gotten their marks in order before the terms became the part of the public domain. There are far too many people and entities podcasting for Apple to win this one, and it only fosters bad will against the company.

I was out when Podcasting first showed up. Apple didn't trademark it, did they? They didn't actually even create it, did they? Some enterprising person said "Hey RSS makes audio feeds work..."

Where does Apple get off trying to cease and desist a common term? This is ridiculous.

Well, seeing as how Apple has been trying to get a trademark on "iPodcast," I would think that's what they're trying to do.

I agree. They should have tried it much, much sooner. But I don't see how "iPodcast" is any different from "iTunes." The word "tunes" is much more commonplace (and has been around A LOT longer) than "podcast" is... and they were granted the trademark of "iTunes."
