Let's actually make this about the best fight scene of all time. Because I like to set rules, we've got to have rules: I say these have to be "fight" scenes (implying individual combat) and not "war scenes". I mostly make this rule to avoid having someone nominate the battle for Minas Tirith in the Lord of the Rings, which would probably irreparably damage what little soul I have left - which is right by the exit, just next to the blues.
I nominate the bath-house scene in Eastern Promises. You're welcome.

Couldn't agree more. That was my pick as well. I frequently tell people about that scene. It's crazy intense. Made more so by the fact that Viggo Mortensen is naked... makes him that much more vulnerable.

My friend watched that, and said that's what made the scene "hilarious."

You've never seen it?
I'm pretty sure there's nothing remotely hilarious about that scene, even if you find penises and blood awesome, like Atheist does.
It's definitely a good movie. As is A History of Violence.

On the subject of chop socky films, can anyone help name this one. I've only seen this one fight scene from it. It's an early Jet Li film, I think set in late 19th or early 20th century war time, JL is in a school classroom and the bad guys are there. He then proceeds to take out the few dozen bad guys who come at him one at a time (because that is how it works in martial arts movies) all while he is stood on one spot, not moving his feet.

Doesn't ring a bell specifically but it might have been Once Upon a Time in China.

I'm not sure you get to call us ladies given your only suggestion involves male nudity.

No, seriously.
Is this it? Are these your suggestions for the greatest movie fight scenes of all time? A bunch of highly choreographed, moderately cheesy one-at-a-time asian fake-martial-arts fight scenes, and a sentimental-but-not-serious Transformers offering? We didn't even get a Fight Club or Happy Gilmour-Bob Barker offering?
I'm flabbergasted. This place truly is gone to the shitter.

The broken artwork of that film just kills me. One shot will be beautifully drawn with realistic shadows, and the next shot will be horribly drawn with no depth or lighting. The jarring juxtaposition just destroys the immersion.
If Hot Rod hadn't jumped in, would Prime have executed the unarmed Megatron? Are we supposed to think he would, because it knocks against the "boy scout" morality that the tv show presented. (And then the Bay movies went and had Prime execute everyone he could corner.)

I have the whole soundtrack on CD and it rocks. Not sure how much of it qualifies as techno though. And not all 80s power ballads are rip offs of each other just because they were all power ballads from the 80s.
You are right about Hot Rod though. Prime would never have executed Megatron unarmed on his hands and knees.

Another vote for They Live, and an honorable mention to the fight between Jimmy and Timmy on South Park.

I was completely unimpressed.
Seriously, I'd take the final Lucy Liu scene in Kill Bill over most of these "authentic" asian martial arts fight scenes. But I generally am not impressed by almost all of these - highly choreographed, highly one-person-at-a-time-from-the-large-enemy-group, highly non-gritty, highly fake.
Meh.

I was only referring to the first fight scene, not the one afterwards.

I find those much less exciting: fights where both opponents exchange countless blows until one or both of them are very exhausted. Often, the hero would receive more blows than the villain, but in the end (s)he is able to turn this around.
Instead, the fight is decided in one or two elegant moves.

No, give'r. I'm sure there's lots of great ones. I just personally don't find highly choreographed and obviously fake "this is pretty much the same dance the Backstreet Boys did, except we're holding weapons and pretending to die" scenes that impressive, or worthy of the title of "best fight scene of all time."
